September 4, 2020.

To the editor,

New Boston Daily.

STREET LIGHT PROBLEM IN BOSTON

Dear Sir, there has been a recurring street light problem in Boston, as should be public knowledge by now which the government has failed to fix despite several appeals.

Majority of street lights in the Boston area don't function at night which makes the streets all the more dangerous as there has been an increase in muggings and petty theft along the darkened corners.

Just last week, my friend was mugged on his way home from music practise and the police are yet to make any arrests, regarding this case.

I appeal to you as the mouthpiece of this city to bring to light what's happening in Boston with the street lights so that effective changes can be made.

Yours faithfully,

Alan Pardew.

Matthew sat inside his car in the parking lot of Arnold's Chicken Palace. He arrived early for his job interview, and he wanted to make sure his attitude was stellar before going inside the restaurant. Unfortunately, he felt petrified. "I can't do this," he told his mother over the phone.
"Yes, you can, Matty," his mother said.
Matthew's hand shook while he pressed his cell phone more tightly against his ear. "All my potential employers have rejected me," he said. "What if nobody hires me?"
"Matthew, you can't think small. Remember who you are, remember your abilities, think about what you want, and then go after it. Shout at it if you have to."
"Shout at my potential job?"
"Sure, why not?" his mother replied. "I believe in you, and you can believe in yourself too."
After Matthew ended his phone call with his mother, he spent a few moments calming himself down. Come on, Matt, you can do this, he thought to himself. You'll be the best manager Arnold's Chicken Palace ever had. While taking deep breaths, he clenched his fists and felt strength surge through his muscular arms.
He closed his eyes and thought about all the other jobs he had interviewed for but did not get. He thought about his bills piling up. He knew this interview would be a very important one. Then he shouted as loudly as he could, "This job is mine!"
Matthew opened his eyes and saw a woman and a little girl walking past his car. They both scurried away quickly.
Embarrassed, Matthew waved at them and cleared his throat.
The day after his interview, Matthew received a phone call from the owner of Arnold's Chicken Palace. "I am very pleased to offer you the position of manager at my restaurant," the owner said. "You were a very impressive candidate for the job," he added. "How did you become such a confident person?"
Matthew clenched his fist and tried to not shout with excitement. With a smile, he replied, "I guess I just believe in myself."

What is the best summary of the passage?
A.
When Matthew is rejected by other employers, he decides to interview for the post of a manager at Arnold's Chicken Palace. Though Matthew is nervous, he decides to call his mother, who tells him that he should think of all the bills he has to pay. Mathew then closes his eyes to calm himself, gives the interview with confidence, and gets hired as a manager.

If schools were to embrace Sherry’s argument and begin flunking students who are not performing at expected levels, the default expectation that every student will pass might be reversed. What risks, if any, would such a change pose for students? What changes might be implemented to help students overcome the risks?

Answers

If schools were to begin flunking students who are not performing at expected levels, it could pose several risks for students. For instance, students who are struggling academically might become discouraged and disengaged from school. It could also lead to an increased emphasis on test scores and grades, which could result in a narrow focus on academic achievement at the expense of other important areas of development.

To help students overcome these risks, schools could implement changes such as providing additional academic support, offering alternative forms of assessment that take into account different learning styles, and emphasizing the importance of effort and growth mindset over grades and test scores. Additionally, schools could work to create a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages students to take risks and learn from their mistakes.

Answer:

Failing students for poor performance can harm them by making them afraid to take risks and demotivated. Schools can help by providing more support, teaching failure as a chance to learn, and creating a supportive environment where all students feel valued. The goal is to help students become confident learners who can reach their goals.
