Cinque Terre

In the hills along the coast of the Italian Riviera rests the five villages of Cinque Terre. They rise into the terraced hills of Italian wine country and overlook the laconic waters of the Ligurian Sea. The name translates to “the five lands,” and each village distinguishes itself from the next in terms of its storybook atmosphere. The food is miraculous. The anchovies are caught fresh daily. The pesto sauce is made from local pine nuts and basil leaves. Bakeries filled with focaccia bread and farinata snacks make Cinque Terre famous the world over.
The scenic overlooks along the coast of Cinque Terre are breathtaking. The villages cling to the walls of green cliffs that plunge into the sea. Dolphins swim and chatter in the surf, hungry for attention from Cinque Terre’s many visitors. Local fisherman haul in nets filled with fresh fish and seafood that grace the tables of nearby cantinas and bistros. Visitors have the opportunity to hike from town to town, enjoying the countryside and romantic landscapes along the way.
Such a magical place to visit or live requires protection from development and pollution. The Italian government recently incorporated the five villages into a national park. It also passed laws to protect the fisheries and coastline. This allows the government to restrict future development that would ruin the landscape or change the unique culture of the locale. Because of the steps taken by the Italian government, Cinque Terre will remain a picturesque community to be enjoyed by visitors for many years to come.

How Chewing Gum Came to Be: The Story of a Piece of Chewing Gum
from The Wonder Book of Knowledge by Henry Chase Hill, 1921

The original "chewing gum" was spruce gum, the exudation of the cut branches of the spruce or fir tree. Later, pure white paraffin wax, variously flavored, took its place, but only in its turn to give way to the "chicle" now almost exclusively employed.

Though its employment in the manufacture of chewing gum is of comparatively recent date, chicle was used by the Indians prior to the days of Columbus as a means of quenching their thirst. It was first commercially imported as a substitute for rubber, but its peculiar suitability for chewing gum has resulted in the entire product being consumed by that industry. In 1885 the United States imported 929,959 pounds of chicle. The growth of the chewing gum industry is shown by the importation of nearly 5,500,000 pounds for the year ending with June 30, 1910.

The trees are "tapped" during the rainy season. The sap, or juice, as it exudes has the appearance of milk, but gradually changes to a yellow color and is about the thickness of treacle. The tree drains rapidly, the full supply of "milk" being generally obtained within a few hours, but an interval of several years usually elapses before it will yield a fresh supply. The milk differs from the juice obtained from the sugar maple, for example, in that it is not the life sap of the tree, and the flow varies greatly, some trees which show full life yielding much less than apparently poorer specimens. "Crude chicle" is obtained by simple boiling and evaporation of the milk, accompanied by frequent kneading. The product, as pressed in rough molds, is of a light gray color.

The bulk of the crude chicle manufactured is shipped in blocks to Canada, where it is further evaporated and carefully refined prior to importation into the United States. When the chicle arrives at one of the chewing-gum factories it is immediately turned over to the grinding department. It comes from Mexico in cakes, varying in size from twelve-to eighteen-inch cubes; these are a putty color, but in composition chicle is porous and brittle, particularly after it is thoroughly dried. In the cubical form it is said to contain from twenty-five to thirty per cent moisture.

The cubes are broken by a large steam hammer into irregular-shaped pieces weighing from a few ounces to a pound. These chunks are then run through grinding machines, which reduce the chicle to a coarse meal. Sometimes this breaking and grinding is done in Mexico, but the duty on ground dried chicle is five cents per pound more than upon cube chicle.

Chicle meal is dried upon frames in a special drying room, which is kept at a temperature of 80° F. An electric blower exhausts all of the moisture from the air. The pure meal is then transformed into a thick syrup under intense heat and passed through a filtering machine, one of the latest and most expensive pieces of machinery employed in the entire manufacture of chewing gum. This machine has practically solved the perplexing problem of separating impurities and foreign substances from chicle. Before the filterer was invented it was almost impossible for the manufacturer of chewing gum to produce gum entirely free from particles of grit.

It is next passed to the cooking department and placed in huge steam-jacketed kettles, which revolve continually and thus keep the chicle from scorching. While it is being cooked in these large kettles sugar is added, and as soon as the gum is done it is placed in a kneading machine. It is now about the consistency of bread or cake dough, and after being kneaded and cooled, flavor is added.

Peppermint, spearmint and other oils used are triply distilled and absolutely free of all impurities. The orange oil comes from Messina and is always the product of the very latest orange crop.

From the kneading machine it reaches a sizing table, to which are attached heavy rollers for reducing the mass of gum to a strip about a quarter of an inch in thickness and twelve inches wide.

At this stage it will be seen the gum begins to take on a ribbon shape. As it comes from the first series of rollers, it is cut into short lengths sprinkled with powdered sugar, and these short lengths are passed in sticks about two feet high on to a second series of rollers. Under the second rollers each short length of gum is once more reduced in thickness and extended in length.

The surfaces of the second rollers contain knives running lengthwise and around. These knives partially cut the gum to its final size. The thin sheets are then sent to another drying room. They remain in this room from twelve to forty-eight hours, according to the season of the year, and are then ready for the wrapping machines.

Why does the idea of the “hypnotic effect” raise criticism about contagion theory?

C.

D.
Individuals often make conscious choices even when in a crowd.

Answers

D. Individuals often make conscious choices even when in a crowd is the reason why the idea of the "hypnotic effect" raises criticism about contagion theory.

Explain why the idea of the "hypnotic effect" raises criticism about contagion theory.

The hypnotic effect is a concept that suggests that individuals in a crowd can become so overwhelmed by group dynamics that they lose their sense of individuality and become mindless followers. This concept has been used to explain some of the extreme behaviours that have been observed in crowds.

However, critics argue that the hypnotic effect is an oversimplification and that individuals in crowds are not passive or mindless. Rather, they suggest that individuals in crowds can make conscious choices and that their actions are influenced by a complex set of social, psychological, and environmental factors.

This criticism is relevant to contagion theory because contagion theory suggests that individuals in crowds are passive and easily influenced by the behaviour of others. However, the idea of the hypnotic effect suggests that individuals in crowds can be influenced to the point of losing their sense of individuality. This contradiction highlights the complexity of human behaviour in crowds and raises questions about the validity of contagion theory as an explanation for crowd behaviour.

The metaphorical meaning is that the speaker is taking a risk by diving into something unknown or uncertain, and they may never reach a point of stability or safety. The phrase "off the deep end" also implies a sense of impulsivity or recklessness, suggesting that the speaker is taking a bold and possibly dangerous step. However, the repetition of "I'll never meet the ground" could also suggest a sense of freedom or liberation, as if the speaker is embracing the unknown and letting go of any fears or doubts. Q1. Write a sentence or two for each question
a) What is the population for this sample survey?
b) what as the desired sample?
c) Is this a census?
d) what is the natural "frame" for this survey?
Q2. How is item non-response likely for each questions asked in the survey above and how would it affect or bias the result for each questions?

Answers

Item non-response can introduce bias into survey results, leading to underestimation or overestimation of certain characteristics or population proportions.

1. a. The population for this sample survey is not specified in the given information.

b.  which indicates the number of individuals the researchers aimed to include in their study.

c. This survey is not a census because it does not aim to collect data from the entire population.

d. The natural "frame" for this survey could be the group of individuals eligible to participate based on the criteria set by the researchers.

2. Item non-response can introduce bias and affect the reliability and representativeness of the survey results.

1. Sentence or two for each question:

a) The population for this sample survey is not specified in the given information. Without knowing the target population, it is difficult to determine the representativeness of the sample.

b) The desired sample size for this survey was 250 participants, which indicates the number of individuals the researchers aimed to include in their study.

c) This survey is not a census because it does not aim to collect data from the entire population. Instead, it gathers information from a subset of individuals (the sample) to make inferences about the larger population.

d) The natural "frame" for this survey could be the group of individuals eligible to participate based on the criteria set by the researchers. It could be, for example, individuals of a certain age range, students of a specific university, or residents of a particular city. However, the specific frame is not mentioned in the given information.

Q2. Explanation of item non-response and its potential impact on survey results:

Item non-response refers to the situation when participants in a survey choose not to answer specific questions. In the given survey, there were four questions asked: about unemployment status, place of birth, height, and weight, along with an additional question about the participant's major. Item non-response can introduce bias and affect the reliability and representativeness of the survey results.

For the question on unemployment, item non-response could potentially lead to underestimation or overestimation of the unemployment rate. If individuals who are unemployed choose not to answer the question, the reported unemployment rate may be lower than the true value. Conversely, if those who are employed refuse to answer, it may lead to an inflated unemployment rate. This bias depends on the reasons for non-response, such as individuals feeling uncomfortable or unwilling to disclose their employment status.

Regarding questions about birthplace, height, and weight, item non-response may introduce selection bias. Participants who choose not to answer these questions could have different characteristics from those who provide the information. For example, if individuals with certain birthplaces or body types are more likely to decline to answer, it could affect the representativeness of the sample and bias the results towards particular demographics.

In summary, item non-response can introduce bias into survey results, leading to underestimation or overestimation of certain characteristics or population proportions. To mitigate this bias, it is important to analyze the patterns of non-response and consider appropriate weighting and imputation techniques to make the results more representative of the target population.

heroism tends to be defined in masculine terms in both beowulf and sir gawain and the green knight. what does it mean to be a hero in both stories? what role is left for women in the respective societies? do the religious elements referenced in the stories contribute to our understanding of heroism in the stories.

Answers

Answer:

In both Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, heroism is defined in terms of physical strength, courage, and the ability to defeat enemies. The heroes in these stories are typically men who go on quests and engage in battles to defend their people and gain honor and glory.

In Beowulf, the role for women is limited to that of supportive figures, such as the queen who mourns Beowulf's death. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the role for women is also limited, with the main female character, Lady Bertilak, serving as a temptress who tests Sir Gawain's chivalry.

The religious elements in both stories do contribute to our understanding of heroism. In Beowulf, the hero's ultimate victory over the dragon is seen as a triumph of good over evil, and is attributed to the intervention of the Christian God. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the hero's quest is seen as a test of his moral character, and his failure to live up to the chivalric code is presented as a failure in his Christian faith.

In the context of the poem No Man Is An Island, what is the importance of community? What does it mean to be a part of a community?

Answers

In the poem by John Donne - No Man Is an Island, the central message is that no one can exist all by themselves. In other words, there is no such thing as self-sufficiency.

He writes:

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; a clod to be washed away by the sea...

Another way of saying this is that everyone must depend on the company, help, comfort, idea, support, etc of others in order to have a well-rounded existence.

What is self-sufficiency?

This, in simple terms, means to be able to live alone independent of the input of others.
