Dr. Lewis, a pediatrician in Seattle City Hospital, gives young parents advice on how they can reduce the likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). What is he most likely to tell them?

Answers

Answer 1

Dr. Lewis, would advise young parents on how to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome By following these : 1) Infants should be put on their backs to sleep, 2) Infants should sleep on a firm, 3) Bed-sharing with your baby should be avoided 4)  Smoking should be avoided during pregnancy 5) Don’t overdress your baby or overheat their sleeping environment.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than one year old, and it is usually observed in infants aged 2 to 4 months.

Infants should be put on their backs to sleep, as this is the safest sleeping position. The risk of SIDS is highest when infants sleep on their stomachs or sides. Encourage your infant to sleep on his or her back.
Infants should sleep on a firm, flat surface without any soft objects, such as pillows, toys, and blankets, that can suffocate them. Put your baby to sleep on a firm and flat surface.
Bed-sharing with your baby should be avoided. Parents who are breastfeeding their infant may choose to do so in the same room but on a separate surface. Put your infant in a separate bed that is nearby.
To reduce the risk of SIDS, smoking should be avoided during pregnancy, and smoking around your infant should be prohibited. Tobacco exposure raises an infant's risk of SIDS.
The baby should be kept at a comfortable temperature and should not be overdressed. Don’t overdress your baby or overheat their sleeping environment.
Pacifiers should be used when putting your baby to sleep. A pacifier can assist in reducing the risk of SIDS.

Dr. Lewis, a pediatrician in Seattle City Hospital, will advise young parents to follow the above instructions to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Catherine the Great, who ruled as Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, is known for her numerous reforms and modernization efforts in the country. However, she never created a written constitution for Russia during her reign.

Catherine did, however, issue a number of charters that served as legal frameworks for various aspects of Russian society, such as the Charter to the Gentry in 1785 and the Charter to the Towns in 1785. These charters established new rules and regulations for the governance of these groups, but they were not comprehensive documents that outlined the rights and responsibilities of all citizens.

Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Oluo's discussion on racism, discuss race as a social construct. Identify the ways you are privileged by race.

Answers

This means that race is not a biological or inherent characteristic, but rather a concept that is created and defined by society. It is important to note that the understanding of race as a social construct challenges the notion that there are distinct and fixed racial categories.

According to CRT, race is a product of historical, social, and political processes that shape individuals' experiences and opportunities in society. It recognizes that racism is not only based on individual prejudice but also embedded within social institutions and structures. In terms of privilege based on race, it is important to acknowledge that privilege refers to the advantages and benefits that individuals receive solely based on their race. As a person of privilege, it is crucial to recognize and understand the ways in which one may be privileged due to their race. Here are a few examples: Access to Opportunities: Privilege based on race can grant individuals access to better educational, employment, and economic opportunities. For example, individuals from racially privileged groups may have greater access to quality schools, higher-paying jobs, and networking opportunities, which can lead to further advantages and success.  Representation and Visibility: Racial privilege often translates into greater representation and visibility in various forms of media, such as movies, TV shows, and advertising.

This representation not only shapes societal perceptions but also influences how racial groups are viewed and valued. Cultural Assumptions and Stereotypes: Privilege based on race can also manifest in the form of cultural assumptions and stereotypes. For instance, certain racial groups may be seen as more intelligent, capable, or trustworthy, while others may be subject to negative stereotypes and discrimination.

The primary contribution of Hermann Ebbinghaus to current cognitive psychology was: Research about factors that might influence human memory and forgetting. The correct option is A.

Ebbinghaus was a pioneer in the study of memory, and his work has greatly influenced modern cognitive psychology. He conducted groundbreaking experiments on memory and forgetting by using himself as a subject, developing a technique called the "nonsense syllable" method.

This method involved memorizing lists of meaningless syllables and testing his recall over time. Through these experiments, Ebbinghaus discovered several principles that still hold true today, such as the forgetting curve and the spacing effect.

His research provided valuable insights into the factors that influence human memory and forgetting, laying the foundation for future studies in this field. By focusing on these aspects, Ebbinghaus emphasized the importance of understanding the cognitive processes behind memory and contributed significantly to our current knowledge of cognitive psychology.

— Monroe Doctrine, U.S. foreign policy enunciated by President James Monroe in ... distinct spheres, Monroe made four basic points: (1) the United States would not ... The doctrine was an outgrowth of concern in both Britain and the United ... Monroe was initially favourable to the idea, and former presidents

Upon becoming President of the United States, George Washington almost immediately set two critical foreign policy precedents: He assumed control of treaty negotiations with a hostile power—in this case, the Creek Nation of Native Americans—and then asked for congressional approval once they were finalized. In addition, he sent American emissaries overseas for negotiations without legislative approval.

In 1789, the French Revolution sent shock waves across the Atlantic. Many Americans, mindful of French aid during their own struggle for independence, supported returning the favor. At the same time, the British were once again inciting Native Americans to attack settlers in the West, hoping to destabilize the fledgling Republic. American anger in response to these attacks served to reinforce sentiments for aiding France in any conflict with Great Britain. Washington was leery of any such foreign entanglement, considering his country too weak and unstable to fight another war with a major European power. His insistence on neutrality in foreign quarrels set another key precedent, as did his insistence that the power to make such a determination be lodged in the presidency.

Within days of Washington's second inauguration, France declared war on a host of European nations, England among them. Controversy over American involvement in the dispute redoubled. The Jefferson and Hamilton factions fought endlessly over the matter. The French ambassador to the U.S.—the charismatic, audacious "Citizen" Edmond Genet—had meanwhile been appearing nationwide, drumming up considerable support for the French cause. Washington was deeply irritated by this subversive meddling, and when Genet allowed a French-sponsored warship to sail out of Philadelphia against direct presidential orders, Washington demanded that France recall Genet.

More British Challenges

In mid-1793, Britain announced that it would seize any ships trading with the French, including those flying the American flag. In protest, widespread civil disorder erupted in several American cities. By the following year, tensions with Britain were so high that Washington had to stop all American shipments overseas. Six large warships were commissioned; among them was the USS Constitution, the legendary "Old Ironsides." An envoy was sent to England to attempt reconciliation, but the British were now building a fortress in Ohio while increasing insurgent activities elsewhere in America.

The President's strong inclination in response to British provocations was to seek a diplomatic solution. But the envoy to England, John Jay, negotiated a weak treaty that undermined freedom of trade on the high seas and failed to compensate Americans for slaves taken by the British during the Revolution. Worst of all, the treaty did not address the then-common British practice of impressment. Congress approved the treaty with the proviso that trade barriers imposed by England be lessened. Washington, while dissatisfied with elements of the treaty, signed it nonetheless.

For the first time, members of the government openly criticized Washington. While this no doubt led to some hard feelings, it was also a milestone. The fledgling government chose partisan sides, verbally jousted with their President, everyone was heard, the public hurled angry rhetoric—and the government remained standing. It was the first example of the partisan give-and-take that has been essential to the survival of American democracy for over two centuries.

There was a single dreadful casualty. Washington's advisers presented him with evidence that Edmund Randolph, Jefferson's successor as secretary of state, had allegedly solicited a bribe from a French envoy to oppose the treaty with England. Although Randolph denied the charges, an angry Washington forced his old friend to resign. With this action, another important precedent was set. The Constitution empowers the President to nominate his principal officers with the advice and consent of the Senate; it says nothing, however, about the chief executive's authority to dismiss appointees. With Washington's dismissal of Randolph, the administrative system of the federal government was firmly tied to the President. In total, Washington dismissed three foreign ministers, two consuls, eight collectors, and four surveyors of internal revenue—all without seeking the advice or approval of Congress.
