How did “Radical Republicans” in Congress (led by Rep. Thaddeus Stevens) try to prevent the South from continuing to discriminate against African Americans?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

The Republicans — then dubbed radical Republicans — managed to enact a series of constitutional amendments and reconstruction acts granting legal equality to former slaves — and giving them access to federal courts if their rights were violated. What happens if a house rejects a bill that was introduced by a member?

The bill can only be reintroduced in the other house.
The bill moves to the other house for a vote.
The bill must be reintroduced in the next legislative session.
The bill must go through the legislative process again.

Answers

A two-thirds vote or greater is needed in both the House and the Senate to override the President's veto. If two-thirds of both houses of Congress vote successfully to override the veto, the bill becomes a law. If the House and Senate do not override the veto, the bill "dies" and does not become a law.

If a house rejects a bill that was introduced by a member then the bill must be reintroduced in the next legislative session. The correct option is (C).

How does bill become a law?

As the Legislative Branch of our government, Congress' main duty is to enact and amend laws.

The Constitution also grants Congress the jurisdiction to impose and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises in order to pay debts, provide for the common defense, and promote the general welfare of the country. This gives Congress control over financial and budgetary policies.

The Speaker of the House or the Senate's presiding officer refers the measure to the appropriate committee. The parliamentarian for the House or Senate usually makes the final decision about the referral. Bills may be divided up and sent to other committees in portions, or they may be referred to more than one committee.

Therefore, if a house rejects a bill that was introduced by a member then the bill must be reintroduced in the next legislative session.

Medieval artists tended to base their depictions of religious themes more heavily on religion. On the other hand, Renaissance artists tended to draw more inspiration from realists rather than religious parts of reality. One of the fundamental contrasts between the two kinds of art is this.

A resurgence of interest in Classical culture was a feature of the Renaissance. It started in the year 1400 and lasted until 1650. The Greek and Roman writings and artwork were rediscovered, and people today have blended their antiquated concepts in novel ways.

It follows the Classical period and precedes the Modern period, making the Mediaeval period traditionally viewed as the midway period in Western civilization.

The verse from Psalm 22:10 reads: "From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God."

This verse uses synthetic parallelism. Synthetic parallelism is when the second line of a verse adds further detail or advances the thought of the first line.

In this verse, the second line, "from my mother's womb you have been my God," builds on and adds to the idea presented in the first line, "From birth I was cast upon you." The poet is expressing the idea that God has been a constant presence in his life since before he was even born. The second line elaborates on the timing and nature of this divine presence, therefore it is synthetic parallelism.

In one or two paragraphs, describe how a typical American's life differed before and during the Industrial Revolution.

Answers

Before the Industrial Revolution, life for the average American was primarily agricultural and rural. Most people lived on small farms or worked on large plantations, relying on manual labor, animal power, and simple tools to get things done. Families often worked together to produce food and goods, and social class was largely determined by one's family background. Life was slower-paced and centered around the rhythms of nature, with work and leisure time blending together in a way that is difficult for us to imagine today. Education was often limited to basic literacy and numeracy, and few opportunities for social mobility existed outside of one's family.

During the Industrial Revolution, however, the American way of life was transformed by technological advances that revolutionized manufacturing and transportation. New machinery and technology, such as the steam engine, the spinning jenny, and the power loom, made it possible to produce goods on a scale and at a speed that was previously unimaginable. This led to the rise of factories and urbanization, as people moved from rural areas to work in cities. Work and leisure time became more separate, and the concept of work-life balance emerged as people worked long hours in factories to earn a living. Education also expanded, with the development of public schools and the growth of colleges and universities, opening up new opportunities for social mobility.

Before the Industrial Revolution, a typical American's life was primarily focused on agriculture and small-scale production. People lived in rural areas and relied on farming for their livelihoods. They had to do most tasks manually, like planting and harvesting crops, and making goods by hand. Life was more self-sufficient and centered around the local community.

During the Industrial Revolution, there was a shift towards industrialization and urbanization. Factories and manufacturing became more prevalent, leading to the growth of cities and the rise of the working class. People left their rural homes to seek employment in factories and mills. Life became more fast-paced and centered around work in the industrial sector. However, this also led to long working hours, poor working conditions, and a widening wealth gap between the industrialists and the working class.

Overall, the Industrial Revolution brought significant changes to the lives of Americans, transforming the economy, society, and daily life.

Answer:

The Industrial Revolution (1750–1900)

The term Industrial Revolution, like similar historical concepts, is more convenient than precise. It is convenient because history requires division into periods for purposes of understanding and instruction and because there were sufficient innovations at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries to justify the choice of this as one of the periods. The term is imprecise, however, because the Industrial Revolution has no clearly defined beginning or end. Moreover, it is misleading if it carries the implication of a once-for-all change from a “preindustrial” to a “postindustrial” society, because, as has been seen, the events of the traditional Industrial Revolution had been well prepared in a mounting tempo of industrial, commercial, and technological activity from about 1000 CE and led into a continuing acceleration of the processes of industrialization that is still proceeding in our own time. The term Industrial Revolution must thus be employed with some care. It is used below to describe an extraordinary quickening in the rate of growth and change and, more particularly, to describe the first 150 years of this period of time, as it will be convenient to pursue the developments of the 20th century separately.

Windmills

Meanwhile, British windmill construction was improved considerably by the refinements of sails and by the self-correcting device of the fantail, which kept the sails pointed into the wind. Spring sails replaced the traditional canvas rig of the windmill with the equivalent of a modern venetian blind, the shutters of which could be opened or closed, to let the wind pass through or to provide a surface upon which its pressure could be exerted. Sail design was further improved with the “patent” sail in 1807. In mills equipped with these sails, the shutters were controlled on all the sails simultaneously by a lever inside the mill connected by rod linkages through the windshaft with the bar operating the movement of the shutters on each sweep. The control could be made more fully automatic by hanging weights on the lever in the mill to determine the maximum wind pressure beyond which the shutters would open and spill the wind. Conversely, counterweights could be attached to keep the shutters in the open position. With these and other modifications, British windmills adapted to the increasing demands on power technology. But the use of wind power declined sharply in the 19th century with the spread of steam and the increasing scale of power utilization. Windmills that had satisfactorily provided power for small-scale industrial processes were unable to compete with the production of large-scale steam-powered mills.

Steam engines

Although the qualification regarding older sources of power is important, steam became the characteristic and ubiquitous power source of the British Industrial Revolution. Little development took place in the Newcomen atmospheric engine until James Watt patented a separate condenser in 1769, but from that point onward the steam engine underwent almost continuous improvements for more than a century. Watt’s separate condenser was the outcome of his work on a model of a Newcomen engine that was being used in a University of Glasgow laboratory. Watt’s inspiration was to separate the two actions of heating the cylinder with hot steam and cooling it to condense the steam for every stroke of the engine. By keeping the cylinder permanently hot and the condenser permanently cold, a great economy on energy used could be effected. This brilliantly simple idea could not be immediately incorporated in a full-scale engine because the engineering of such machines had hitherto been crude and defective. The backing of a Birmingham industrialist, Matthew Boulton, with his resources of capital and technical competence, was needed to convert the idea into a commercial success. Between 1775 and 1800, the period over which Watt’s patents were extended, the Boulton and Watt partnership produced some 500 engines, which despite their high cost in relation to a Newcomen engine were eagerly acquired by the tin-mining industrialists of Cornwall and other power users who badly needed a more economic and reliable source of energy.

The Iroquois Nation wants the British to leave because they are disrupting hunting and using up recourses that belong to the Native American. They think the British don't have the right to be there.

Considering the excerpt, the sentiment of the Iroquois Nation towards the British is that:

"the British are encroachers and should no longer stay on their land."

This is evident when Canassatego the Chief of Onondaga Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy claimed that they now understood the value of their land, and as such, they no longer want the cheap things the British gave them, but rather want to keep their land.

He further claimed that the British are encroaching and spoiling their land activities, thus must leave their land since they have no rights.

Hence, in this case, it is concluded that the sentiment of the Iroquois Nation towards the British is that the British are encroachers, and should no longer stay on their land.

Based on information in the article, what is one way that small farms are different from larger ones in the U.S.?
A.Children working on small farms are less likely to harvest tobacco leaves and show signs of Green Tobacco Sickness.

B.Labor laws do not set a minimum age at which children are able to start working on small farms in the United States.

C.United States labor laws for small farms are being questioned, especially for workers who are age 18 or older.

D.Small farms have enough money to offer better pay and more effective protective gear to their field laborers.

International rights group Human Rights Watch released a report about children who work on U.S. tobacco farms. In response to the results, the organization is urging the government and the tobacco industry to protect these young workers.
The report is based on interviews with more than 140 children working on farms in the U.S. states of North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. It claims that children as young as 7 are in some cases working long hours in fields harvesting tobacco leaves. Sometimes, the work is done under hazardous conditions. Most of what the group documented is legal. Human Rights Watch wants cigarette makers to push for safety on farms from which they buy tobacco. The group also wants the U.S. government to change labor laws.
"The U.S. has failed America's families by not meaningfully protecting child farmworkers from dangers to their health and safety, including on tobacco farms," said Margaret Wurth, a children's rights researcher who co-authored the report.
In their interviews, the child tobacco farm workers indicated that their health and safety were indeed at risk. Nearly three-quarters of them reported becoming ill, with symptoms including vomiting, nausea, and headaches. These are indications of Green Tobacco Sickness, which can occur when a person handles tobacco leaves and nicotine is absorbed into the skin. The children also reported working long hours, often in extremely hot conditions, which can be dangerous. They said that they were not given overtime pay or sufficient breaks. In addition, the children and they donned no, or inadequate, protective gear.

U.S. law puts limits on labor performed by minors (children under age 18). But these restrictions vary by industry.

According to the Human Rights Watch report, U.S. agriculture labor laws are more lax, allowing children to work longer hours at younger ages and in more hazardous conditions than children in any other industry. With a parent's permission, children as young as 12 can be hired for unlimited hours outside of school hours on a farm of any size. There's no minimum age for children to work on small farms. In 2011, the U.S. Labor Department proposed changes that would have prohibited age 16 from working on tobacco farms. However, these changes were never passed into law.
Human Rights Watch met with many of the world's biggest cigarette makers and tobacco growers to discuss its findings. The group hoped to push the farms and companies to adopt or strengthen their labor and safety policies. The companies say that they are concerned about child labor. They have developed standards, including requiring growers to provide a safe work environment and adhere to child labor laws.
