Read the passage from the opinion of the court in Dred Scott v. Sandford, written by Justice Taney.

The question before us is, whether the class of persons described in the plea in abatement compose a portion of this people, and are constituent members of this sovereignty? We think they are not, and that they are not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word "citizens" in the Constitution, and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which that instrument provides for and secures to citizens of the United States. On the contrary, they were at that time considered as a subordinate and inferior class of beings, who had been subjugated by the dominant race, and, whether emancipated or not, yet remained subject to their authority, and had no rights or privileges but such as those who held the power and the Government might choose to grant them.

Which statement best serves as a counterclaim to the claim in this passage?

Taney fails to provide any actual evidence for his statements that Black people were universally considered inferior.
Taney cannot use states’ rights to claim that the plaintiff is not a citizen, because citizenship is federal.
Taney’s argument that emancipated people were still controlled by White people is false because they were free.
Taney’s argument that Blacks were not citizens is false because their ancestors were forced to come here.

Answers

Taney cannot use states’ rights to claim that the plaintiff is not a citizen, because citizenship is federal is the statement best serves as a counterclaim to the claim in this passage. Hence, option A is correct.

What is the concept of the passage?

Justice Taney makes the case in this text that black people, as defined by the Dred Scott v. Sandford decision, do not meet the constitutional definition of "citizens" and do not thus have the same rights and advantages as American citizens.

Black people, according to him, were considered a "subordinate and inferior class of beings" who were "subject to the authority" of the dominant race at the time the Constitution was being written and were only entitled to the rights and privileges bestowed upon them by those in positions of authority.

Thus, option A is correct.

Answer:

2.2. Two reasons why young people should take ownership of finding a job are:

Personal growth and development: Job searching allows young people to develop valuable skills such as networking, communication, and time management. Taking ownership of their job search also demonstrates initiative and responsibility, which can increase their confidence and self-esteem.

2.3. The recruitment process typically involves the following steps:

Finding suitable applicants: This step involves advertising the job and sourcing potential candidates through various channels, such as job boards, social media, or employee referrals.

Processing the applicants: Once applications are received, they are reviewed to determine which candidates meet the minimum qualifications for the job. This may involve a screening process or an initial phone interview.

Interviewing and appointing suitable candidates: This final step involves conducting in-person interviews with the top candidates, conducting reference checks, and ultimately appointing the most suitable candidate for the job.

2.4. Three ways that your personal online profile/posts could negatively influence a prospective employer's view of you during the recruitment process are:

The answer is C. France should govern the American colonies instead of Britain because the British king is a descendant of a Frenchman.

How to explain the information

The Loyalist claim that Paine is refuting is that the American colonies should be governed by Britain because the colonists are of English descent. Paine argues that this is a flawed argument, because the British king himself is a descendant of a Frenchman. Therefore, by the same logic, France should govern England.

The other answer choices are not correct. Option A is incorrect because Paine is not arguing that the American colonies should join Britain in any future war against France. Option B is incorrect because Paine is not arguing that Britain should govern the American colonies. Option D is incorrect because Paine is not arguing that the American colonies should not trade with France.

discuss the use of any three images used in the black hermit that help bring out the theme for the story

Answers

Answer:

Three images were used in "The Black Hermit" to help bring out the theme for the story which centered on Nationalism and Tribalism.  They are:

1) Jane, a comfort woman, depicted as an object of contentment, as Remi - the protagonist, found "contentment in the Jane, his new lover ..." in the city (emphasis on "the" is mine).  Mark the use of the article "the" in reference to Jane.  Thus, Jane was totally objectified, showing that she was not  regarded as a person, but an object from which Remi derived sexual satisfaction in the city where he exiled himself from his tribe.  The Jane is, therefore, an image of a woman, who provides sexual satisfaction.  The Jane could have been any woman, provided she played her role to Remi.

2) Another image was the use of "Youth" as "a cloth that can wear away."  It is true that youth is a passing age.  It does not last forever.  But, does youth wear away?  Yes, actually it does.  Like cloth, too much indulgence in youthful exuberances and "washing" of youthful age can lead it to "wear and tear."  This warns our youth to be mindful of how they use their time.  The beautiful, well-bottomed and breast-pointed lady soon becomes like a sexually unattractive and aged woman with shivering legs and sagging breasts.

3) The change of regime following independence from the colonial British empire was depicted as the tribally re-arranged marriage to Remi's late brother's wife, Thorni - a kind of change of baton.  Similarly, as independence was demanded by Kenyan nationalists, this particular tribal re-marriage was required by tribalists.  Remi would be handed leadership of the nation and a wife he did not love, thus depicting the inherent conflict between Nationalism and Tribalism.  Where does one's loyalty lie?  The tribal wife represents national leadership of the newly independent nation.  Is leadership forced on people without their total consent and aspiration?

Explanation:

"The Black Hermit" was a play written by  Ngugi wa Thiong’o, and first published in 1968.  The Makerere College Students Dramatic Society at the Ugandan National Theatre first played out the play on November 1962.

The Black Hermit chronicled the conflicts faced by African nationalists who won independence from their colonial masters.  African governments since independence have failed to solve the problems that confronted them.   These included tribalism, land clashes, and inequalities.

All over Nigeria, for instance, after 60 years of independence, the country has not found its bearing.  Every year there have been tribal wars and clashes.  Those entrusted with political leadership are yet to grasp the enormity of their responsibilities.  They actively play one citizen against the other, one tribe against the other, one religion against the other, and one political association against the other.  Tribal racism is still rampant in social, economic, and political spheres.  While they demonstrate against racism in the U.S., back home, they do everything to engender, promote, and sustain tribal, political, economic and religious racism, unmindful of the negative impact on their nations.

The play is divided into three parts: Act One, Act Two, and Act Three with three scenes each. The first and third acts occur in the countryside while the second one happened in the town.

The main character was Remi and the minor ones included Thoni, Nyobi, Omange, Pastor, Jane, and the elders.

Trey, still disguised as a Population Police officer, sets out to do so but the road to success is filled with problems. He is attacked twice by mobs of hungry people and arrives at the prison only to discover the prisoner he's helping free as part of his deal with the soldier turns out to be Mr. Talbot. The soldier is a rebel working against the Population Police from inside.

Lee is also released and the boys, along with another soldier who helps them escape, arrive at a secret house where another friend, Mr. Hendrix, has been left alone because the police believe he can't possibly survive. Trey struggles with the idea that he's acted bravely when necessary despite his self-image as a cowardly person. Trey discovers a list of one hundred other third children and determines to volunteer for the Population Police with the hope that he can mount attacks from within. He believes the children themselves are the key to eliminating the Population Police. He's joined by several of the others, including Mark, who promises to join them as soon as he recovers from a broken leg.

The old man had been drinking, and in that state wandered away, and was found by some peasants, who carried him to their king, Midas. Midas recognized him, and treated him hospitably, entertaining him for ten days and nights with an unceasing round of jollity.[2] On the eleventh day he brought Silenus back, and restored him in safety to his pupil. Whereupon Bacchus offered Midas his choice of a reward, whatever he might wish. He asked that whatever he might touch should be changed into gold. Bacchus consented, though sorry that he had not made a better choice.[3] Midas went his way, rejoicing in his new-acquired power, which he hastened to put to the test. He could scarce believe his eyes when he found a twig of an oak, which he plucked from the branch, become gold in his hand. He took up a stone; it changed to gold. He touched a sod; it did the same. He took up an apple from the tree; you would have thought he had robbed the garden of the Hesperides. His joy knew no bounds, and as soon as he got home, he ordered the servants to set a splendid repast on the table. Then he found to his dismay that whether he touched bread, it hardened in his hand; or put a morsel to his lip, it defied his teeth. He took a glass of wine, but it flowed down his throat like melted gold.[4] In consternation at the unprecedented affliction, he strove to divest himself of his power; he hated the gift he had lately coveted. But all in vain; starvation seemed to await him. He raised his arms, all shining with gold, in prayer to Bacchus, begging to be delivered from his glittering destruction. Bacchus, merciful deity, heard and consented. "Go," said he, "to River Pactolus, trace its fountain-head, there plunge yourself and body in, and wash away your fault and its punishment." He did so, and scarce had he touched the waters before the gold-creating power passed into them, and the river sands became changed into gold, as they remain to this day.Passage 2: "Bacchus's Regret" by Hunter Doyle[1] King Midas returned my beloved teacher to me,so I rewarded him with a wishwhatever he wanted would be.Midas cried, "Give my fingers a golden touch! Then, I shall have a gilded kingdom and such."[5] I tried to make him see the err of his choice, but he would not heed the caution in my voice.I pleaded with Midas, "Be careful what you choose, for you're only thinking of what you'll gainnot what you'll lose."[9] His thirst for wealth became no match for his appetite;after all, a gold apple is not something one can bite. His daughter wept for her poor starving dad,so he wiped her tears and told her not to be sad.[13] Into a golden statue Midas's daughter became, and he and his greedy wish were ultimately to blame.Yet, maybe if I had put up more of a fight and a fret, then I wouldn't have to live with all this regret. How does the poem show the theme greed can have negative consequences differently than the myth?
