a short story, a scientist spends decades working to genetically engineer a chimpanzee that can produce human speech. Her eventual success reveals that animals of all kinds are far smarter and more perceptive than we had ever realized. In the end, the chimpanzee is released into the wild and the scientist's work erased because humans are not comfortable with this knowledge.
What are two common literary themes that this story most clearly shows?
• A. The determination to succeed and the acceptance of failure
• B. The power of science and the evil of humankind
C. The complexity of nature and the security of ignorance
• D. The domination of man over nature and unrealized dreams
C. The complexity of nature and the security of ignorance
A. The determination to succeed and the acceptance of failure
In this short story, the two common literary themes that are most clearly shown are the complexity of nature and the security of ignorance, as well as the determination to succeed and the acceptance of failure.
1. The story revolves around a scientist who dedicates decades of her life to genetically engineer a chimpanzee capable of human speech.
2. The scientist's ultimate success in achieving her goal reveals that animals, including the chimpanzee, possess a level of intelligence and perception far beyond what humans had previously realized.
3. This discovery highlights the complexity of nature, suggesting that there is much more to animals and their abilities than meets the eye.
4. However, despite this breakthrough, the story takes a turn when the chimpanzee is released into the wild, and all evidence of the scientist's work is erased.
5. This outcome reflects the theme of the security of ignorance, as it implies that humans are not comfortable with the knowledge that animals are highly intelligent and perceptive beings.
6. The society depicted in the story prefers to remain ignorant about the true capabilities of animals, possibly due to fears or concerns about the implications of such knowledge.
7. Additionally, throughout the narrative, the scientist's unwavering determination to succeed is evident, as she devotes decades of her life to achieve her goal of creating a chimpanzee capable of human speech.
8. However, the story also explores the theme of the acceptance of failure, as despite her success, the scientist's work is ultimately erased and her achievements go unrecognized by the wider world.
In conclusion, the story effectively portrays the complexity of nature and the security of ignorance as well as the themes of determination to succeed and the acceptance of failure.

In both biscuit recipes, why does the author begin the instructions with "Preheat oven to 450 degrees”?
so the biscuits can start warming before the dough is ready
so the oven is warm when the dough is ready to bake
so the reader can begin warming the butter before adding it
so the reader can keep the various ingredients warm
The author begins the instructions with "Preheat oven to 450 degrees" in both biscuit recipes to ensure that the oven is hot enough and ready to bake the biscuits once the dough is prepared.
The oven should be preheated before the dough is ready to bake so that the biscuits can be put in the oven right away. Otherwise, waiting for the oven to heat up after the dough is prepared will reduce the rising capacity of the biscuits.
In biscuit recipes, the oven should be preheated to a high temperature so that the biscuits can rise quickly. If the oven is not hot enough, the biscuits will not rise properly.
The oven temperature affects the rise of the biscuits. Preheating the oven at the start of the recipe ensures that the oven is hot enough to allow the biscuits to rise to their full potential. The biscuits will be fluffy, light, and golden brown if the oven is hot enough.
To conclude, preheating the oven at the start of the biscuit recipe ensures that the oven is warm enough when the dough is ready to bake. Preheating the oven also helps the biscuits to rise to their full potential, resulting in fluffy and golden brown biscuits.

Dog Training Me?
by Bryan Ellett
My new dog is a mutt, or a mix of breeds, most likely a mix between a basset hound and a beagle. No one knows for sure, though. His name is Capote, and he is a really attractive dog, small but sturdy. He has great posture and always looks proud, sticking his chest out slightly and standing tall. There is only one problem, but it’s a big problem: he won’t fetch.
Actually, it’s worse than that. Not only will he not fetch, he’s making me play his game! I throw the ball, and Capote goes running after it, as if fetch is the thing in the world he most enjoys. He begins bringing the ball back to me, but then he runs right past me. I follow him, reaching for the ball and trying to pull it out of his mouth, but he keeps turning away from me, teasing me with the ball! He’s not playing fetch; he’s playing “come chase me!” And he’s training me to do it, too!
Once I realized this, I read some books, and I’ve changed my strategy. If he runs past me with the ball, I don’t follow him, and I don’t reach for the ball. Instead, I turn my back on him and ignore him. He really does like to play, so me ignoring him is a tremendous punishment! Eventually, he’ll bring the ball over to me, and once he does, I immediately throw it. That way, he knows that he’ll be rewarded with another throw if he brings me the ball. He is not a perfect fetch player yet, but I can now tell that one day he will be!
Which statement is supported by the story?

The dog will never learn how to play fetch.

why does lincoln say that his 2nd inaugural address does not need to be long and will, in fact, be short?
In his Second Inaugural Address, President Abraham Lincoln stated that it did not need to be long because the situation had been long known.
He said that “The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself, and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all. With high hope for the future, no prediction in regard to it is ventured.” He further said that his address would be short, because “the occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion.”
He also stated that his address was intended to be brief, because “we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate—we cannot hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.”

4. How does Scout's refusal to lead Boo home show her growing acceptance of
her femininity?
Hello! The answer to this question is:
Because she knows that her neighbors might talk if they saw Boo Radley being led across the street by an eight-year-old girl, Scout places her arm in the crook of Boo Radley's elbow, so that it looks like Boo is accompanying her, rather than the other way around. This shows how obvious the gossipy nature of the town is, that it has been picked up on by Scout to the extent that she knows how it might be misconstrued, whether deliberately or accidentally, and shared. The magnitude of this nature is shown because in all the strangeness of Boo Radley being out of the house, Scout is still aware that the small detail of who is leading whom may be remarked upon. This also shows Scout's loyalty to and care for Boo, as she is thinking of him when she acts like this, to protect him from the gossip of the neighborhood as much as she can. The act of her leading him across the road in the dark also shows the reversal in roles: while Boo is afraid, Scout becomes strong to guide him, a situation which differs greatly from their last encounter, during the fire, where Scout was weak and Boo was there to help her.
