what were washington's domestic and foreign policies?
what were the immediate and long-term impacts he had on presidency?

Answers

Answer:

among George Washington's critics are those who wonder how the nation might have developed had he sided with Jefferson in the partisan debates that swirled all around him as President. By identifying himself with Hamilton, he actually furthered the partisanship he so vigorously denounced in his farewell speech to the nation. In the eyes of those historians who doubt his greatness, this is Washington's most significant failure as President.

How might Greek mythology be used to explain events and natural occurrences in everyday life?

Answers

It gave advice to society on the best way to live a prosperous life. Myths were also used to re-tell historical events so that people could maintain contact with their ancestors, the wars they fought, and the places they explored

The Greeks utilized their religion, like other ancient cultures, to explain everything that happened to them. In order to explain the natural phenomena they saw, such as the dawn and storms, sunset, the passage of time, and the changing of the seasons, they turned to mythology.

What is the significance of the Greek mythology?

The arts and literature of Western civilization, which acquired a great deal of Greek culture, have been greatly influenced by Greek mythology. Ancient Greek myths describe how the world was formed and provide explanations for why certain events occur, just like those of many other civilizations.

They looked to mythology to provide an explanation for the natural occurrences they observed, such as the morning and storms, the sunset, the passing of time, and the changing of the seasons.

Therefore, like other ancient societies, the Greeks used their religion to make sense of all that had occurred to them.

Segregation started in the first half of the 20th century. During the segregation in most part of the country many colored people weren't able  to vote. White people didn't even want to sell their houses to colored people.  The colored kids weren't even able to go to school with the whites. In one point there were different neighborhoods separating the two.   Martin Luther King was a civil rights advocate against racism, segregation, and brought justice for African Americans. One of his great works along with his wife Loretta Scott King was the march in 1965. It lasted five days. Another one of his great works was the Montgomery bus boycott in December 1955. Because of this event, MLK's house was bombed and he got arrested. But there was victory. In 1956, the Supreme Court decided to ban segregated buses. Martin Luther King Jr was also an American Baptist Minister. He played a huge role in the civil rights movement from the mid 1950s until the 1968s. For this, he made many accomplishments in his life. According to the Nobel Prize Website, Martin Luther King Jr. received a B.A degree in 1948 from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.  In the eleven year period between 1957 and 1968 Martin Luther King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty- five hundred times. All this, Martin Luther King Jr. did to help overturn injustices, fight racism, remove segregation, and make things fair for African Americans.

↓What are three ways that God speaks to us today?↓

What are three ways that God speaks to us today?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

1. Words We Hear

The first way God speaks is the one that’s most often associated with hearing his voice: words we hear. While we would all love to hear an ‘audible’ voice, hearing God’s voice speak in this way appears somewhat rare and particularly reserved for those moments when we’re about to step out into the traffic! The word ‘audible’ itself may indeed be a misnomer – according to my doctoral research, most of those who have experienced it, say it would not have been heard by those around them (See Waiting for God to Speak Out Loud? Think Again). Mostly it seems, the Spirit speaks to us inaudibly and internally – with a message that sounds much like our own thoughts – i.e the ‘still small voice’ of Elijah’s experience (1 Kings 19:9-13).

When God speaks in words, he may give us a single phrase or he may use full sentences. He may use a wordplay (eg. Jeremiah 1:11-12) or give us a riddle that calls us to ponder (Numbers 12:8). Often he’ll ask a question to get us thinking (1 Kings 19:9, 2 Chronicles 1:7) and as the conversation continues, he reveals something more significant later on.

2. Pictures We See

The second way God speaks is in pictures that we see. As God said through the prophet Jeremiah; “Which of them has stood in the council of the Lord to see or to hear his word?” (Jeremiah 23:18, italics mine). We hear his message through words, but we see his message through pictures.

At first, this may seem an unusual way to speak, but we need to remember picture language is the most basic of languages. When children first learn to read, we give them a picture book to practise with – not the Oxford Dictionary. Further, imagery is the most expressive way to communicate which is why it is often said that a picture tells a thousand words. Perhaps this is why God communicates in this way so often in the Scriptures, particularly in the Old Testament where dreams and visions comprise ⅓ of the content (Read: Dreams – God’s Favourite Form of Communication).

When God speaks in pictures, his message comes in dreams when we’re sleeping or visions when we’re awake. Sometimes the picture speaks symbolically and requires interpretation (see for example; The Meaning of Vehicles in Dreams). Other times, the scene is more literal.

Sometimes God’s visual messages are full of riddles, poetry and allegorical forms that are not easily interpreted or measurable. These can be compared to the parables of Jesus which use images or scenes to communicate an idea. Walton suggests that the reason word pictures are used by God is to engage the right side of our brains.1 (This idea was touched on in the podcast: Are Women Better at Hearing God’s Voice?)

Communication in picture form is a way of speaking that the Western church often finds difficult to accept. Writers like Dallas Willard2 and Wayne Grudem3 have gone so far to say it is not a valid way to hear God’s voice. The reasons are primarily historical – an unfortunate product of Reformation thinking that downplayed the so-called mystical forms of spiritual experience. In fact, imagery is the most common form of communication in the Scriptures and can be the most powerful and creative way of all (Read Why God Speaks in Dreams and Visions or listen to this podcast as an example).

3. Emotions We Feel

Finally, God’s messages may come packaged as emotions we feel. In other words, we sense what God is saying to us. The emotion of the Holy Spirit is felt physically and this in itself communicates a message.

So the presence of hope may invade us, comforting us and calling us forward (Galatians 5:22-23, 1 Corinthians 14:3). Peace becomes a guide to lead us (Colossians 3:15) and a deep-seated conviction may turn us around (John 16:8). A friend of mine with a ministry in healing often experiences a sense of sadness when she meets someone who the Holy Spirit wants to touch in a profound way.

One of the reasons why dreams can be such powerful communicators is because the emotion we experience in them becomes part of the message. Daniel felt deep anguish when he first experienced his visions (Daniel 10:1-9), John found himself weeping (Revelation 5:4) and Peter was revulsed by what he had seen in his trance (Acts 10:14). Of course on the other hand, feelings of guilt, shame, fear or condemnation are never a part of God’s communiqués to us.

So God speaks to us in words, pictures and emotions. There are other forms too – although these are not as common. In my doctoral studies, I’ve interviewed people who have heard from the Holy Spirit through the senses of taste and smell! God packages his message to us in a myriad of forms. He is a masterful communicator who knows how to get his message across to those who are listening.

You are pleased with your research and would like to continue examining these three sites, but you receive bad news. Someone wants to build a tourist resort on the site in East Africa. The company that discovered the cave while they were preparing to dig the tunnel wants to continue its work. Another company wants to build a shopping center on top of the third site. All of these projects are important and will generate jobs and money. The projects also have many supporters.

How important are the archaeological sites? You think they should be preserved and therefore you go to government agencies to seek help. The officials are interested but point out that you do not have a lot of public support. If nobody knows how important these sites are, how can they spend the time and money protecting and preserving them?

You decide to reach out to the editor of a major newspaper. The articles in this newspaper are available throughout the world via the Internet. The editor is delighted to help you. “Why don’t you write an op-ed?” she asks. “That will let people know how important these sites are.” You agree; but there’s one problem. You’ve never written an op-ed before. What is it and how do you do it?

Answers

Answer:

An OP-ED is a printed page in a newspaper that is devoted to commentary, feature articles, and such.

Distinguishing Characteristics of an Op-Ed or Column

Partly, a column is defined by where it appears, but it shares some common characteristics:

• Typically, it is short, between 750 and 800 words.

• It has a clearly defined point.

• It has a clearly defined point of view.

• It represents clarity of thinking.

• It contains the strong, unique voice of the writer.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Writing an Op-Ed or Column

• Do I have a clear point to make?

• What is it?

• Who cares? (Writing with a particular audience in mind can inform how you execute your

column. Who is it that you are trying to convince? Why are you targeting that specific

reader?)

• Is there substance to my argument?

Topic and Theme

Every successful op-ed piece or column must have a clearly defined topic and theme.

• Topic: the person, place, issue, incident, or thing that is the primary focus of the column.

The topic is usually stated in the first paragraph.

• Theme: another level of meaning to the topic. What’s the big, overarching idea of the

column? What’s your point? Why is your point important? The theme may appear early in

the piece or it may appear later when it may also serve as a turning point into a deeper

level of argument.

Research

While columns and op-ed pieces allow writers to include their own voice and express an opinion,

to be successful the columns must be grounded in solid research. Research involves acquiring

facts, quotations, citations, or data from sources and personal observation. Research also allows

a reader to include sensory data (touch, taste, smell, sound, or sight) into a column. There are

two basic methods of research:

• Field research: going to the scene, interviews, legwork; primary materials, observations,

and knowledge

• Library, academic, or internet research: using secondary materials, including graphs,

charts, and scholarly articles

Openings

The first line of an op-ed is crucial. The opening “hook” may grab the reader’s attention with a

strong claim, a surprising fact, a metaphor, a mystery, or a counter-intuitive observation that

entices the reader into reading more. The opening also briefly lays the foundation for your

argument.

Endings

Every good column or op-ed piece needs a strong ending which has some basic requirements. It:

• Echoes or answers introduction

• Has been foreshadowed by preceding thematic statements

• Is the last and often most memorable detail

• Contains a final epiphany or calls the reader to action

There are two basic types of endings. An “open ending” suggests rather than states a conclusion,

while a “closed ending” states rather than suggests a conclusion. The closed ending in which the

point of the piece is resolved is by far the most commonly used.

Voice

Having a strong voice is critical to a successful column or op-ed piece. Columns are most

typically conversational in tone, so you can imagine yourself have a conversation with your reader

as you write (a short, focused conversation). But the range of voice used in columns can be wide:

contemplative, conversational, descriptive, experienced, informative, informed, introspective,

observant, plaintive, reportorial, self-effacing, sophisticated, humorous, among many other

possibilities.

Sometimes what voice you use is driven by the publication for which you are writing. A good

method of perfecting your voice is to get in the habit of reading your column or op-ed out loud.

Doing so gives you a clear sense of how your piece might sound – what your voice may come off

as – to your intended reader.

Revision Checklist

Some things to remember as you revise your op-ed or column before you submit it for publication:

• Check clarity.

• Check coherence and unity.

• Check simplicity.

• Check voice and tone. (Most are conversational; some require an authoritative voice.)

• Check direct quotations and paraphrasing for accuracy.

• Check to make sure you properly credit all sources though formal citations are not

necessary.)

• Check the consistency of your opinion throughout your op-ed or column.

An op-ed is an opinion article that is published in a newspaper or magazine.

The article expresses the writer’s point of view on the issue at hand. It should be written in a clear and concise manner with a focus on facts, rather than emotional arguments. To write an effective op-ed, start by researching the issue. Gather reliable sources to back up your claims and make sure the evidence is relevant.

Use this information to form your opinion and write a short, compelling argument. Include a conclusion to the article that encourages readers to act. Finally, submit your op-ed to the newspaper or magazine of your choice. If the editor accepts your piece, your work will be seen by many people, and that knowledge can help make a difference.

Do you think the United States should attempt to ban gerrymandering? If yes, what law would you like to see put in place to achieve this?

Answers

Answer: In representative democracies, gerrymandering is the political manipulation of electoral district boundaries with the intent to create undue advantage for a party.

The United States Supreme Court has affirmed in Miller v. Johnson (1995) that racial gerrymandering is a violation of constitutional rights and upheld decisions against redistricting that is purposely devised based on race. However, the Supreme Court has struggled when partisan gerrymandering occurs

Why is gerrymandering bad? Gerrymandering means to draw congressional districts to the advantage of the political party that controls the State's legislature. This is a tactic that does not give equal representation to minority groups in the Congress.
