The numbers that Major Tallmadge assigned to members of the Culper Ring were from a secret writing system he invented. He substituted digits for words that would be used in messages. "Long Island," for example, was 728, "arms" was 7, and "city" was 88. There was a number for each month, such as 34l for "January." He made four copies of his codes. He kept one and gave the others to Woodhull, Townsend, and General Washington. For words that did not have a number code, Tallmadge gave his agents a cipher. In a cipher, each letter in a message is replaced by another letter or a number.
Which best describes the central idea of this excerpt?

Use the poem "Recuerdo" by Edna St. Vincent Millay to complete the activity.
(1) We were very tired, we were very merry—
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry.
It was bare and bright, and smelled like a stable—
But we looked into a fire, we leaned across a table,
We lay on a hill-top underneath the moon;
And the whistles kept blowing, and the dawn came soon.
(2) We were very tired, we were very merry—
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold.
(3) We were very tired, we were very merry,
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry.
We hailed, “Good morrow, mother!” to a shawl-covered head,
And bought a morning paper, which neither of us read;
And she wept, “God bless you!” for the apples and pears,
And we gave her all our money but our subway fares.
In one to two sentences, explain how the repeated lines contribute to the overall meaning of the poem.
The repeated lines in the poem “Recuerdo” by Edna St. Vincent Millay serve to emphasize the central theme of the poem: the memory of a joyful and carefree night spent with a loved one. The repetition also creates a sense of rhythm and structure, adding to the dreamlike quality of the poem.

Read the excerpt from "Healthy Eating."
But no one can ignore the damage being wrought by all this bad eating. More than one out of three adults in the United States -- 37.5 percent -- are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of the leading causes of death -- heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes -- are directly linked to obesity. And childhood obesity has tripled in the last 30 years. With more than a third of kids between 6 and 19 considered obese, the CDC reports, they are at substantially more risk for developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, bone and joint conditions, and cancer.

5. Identify examples of how Miss Johnson helps her students to “dream impossible dreams” in the excerpt from We Beat the Street.
(Skills Focus Question #5)
Answer:
(I might have got some things wrong because I kinda rushed to read the PDF)
Explanation:
1. Miss Johnson talked about Shakespeare to her students, telling them about the things Shakespeare done and Shakespeare dream and stuff.
2. Miss Johnson says, "In order to seek his fortune as an actor and writer, Shakespeare ran away from home shortly after he got married, leaving his wife and three children to make it without him." Not that Miss Johnson was telling her students to get married and then run away to achieve their dreams-- but something like make a few sacrifices (give up a subject) to achieve what you really want to do and your dream.
3. She tells George about college and how George could probably learn to write symphonies or plays. George thinks about this and thinks college like something foreign and vague-- "like going to China or the moon.", because Miss Johnson told George this, George is more interested and curious about college and thinks about dreams and stuff.
4. Miss Johnson tells George that he's the smartest kid in her class and that being smart isn't "uncool" . She says that it doesn't matter what others think and that being smart can get George fit for college.
Sorry I couldn't find a 5!!

The following passage (paragraph 45) mainly shows that .
The expectation for the Lady Vols is to win a championship. It’s a wonderful burden — to be known and celebrated for greatness, but to be disappointed in anything that falls short of another championship banner. I wouldn’t be truthful if I said it’s not a challenge. I’ve had to grow more in the last five years than the 25 plus that came before.

Coatis are raccoon-like mammals native to South and Central America. Many people find them cute, and tourists have made a habit of offering the coatis food. Coatis realize that it is easier to seek out tourists than to search the forest for bugs. Like humans, they prefer junk food to what they should be eating. For their part, tourists do little to discourage the animals. After all, a coati drinking soda makes for a great vacation photo. Scientists, however, say that coatis and humans do best when they stay away from each other.

Journal Entry: Finding a Recipe Online
Today I was feeling adventurous and decided to try a new dish for dinner. I searched online for some recipes and found one that looked delicious and easy to make. It was called **chicken and mushroom pie** and it had a lot of positive reviews.
I followed the instructions carefully and gathered all the ingredients. I had to chop some onions, garlic, mushrooms and chicken, and cook them in a skillet with some butter, flour, chicken stock, cream and herbs. Then I transferred the mixture to a pie dish and covered it with some puff pastry. I brushed some egg on top and baked it in the oven for about 25 minutes.
The result was amazing! The pie was golden and flaky on the outside, and creamy and savory on the inside. The chicken was tender and the mushrooms added a nice texture and flavor. It was very filling and satisfying, and I enjoyed every bite. I felt proud of myself for trying something new and succeeding.
I think I will make this dish again in the future, maybe with some variations. I wonder what other recipes I can find online that are easy and tasty. Maybe I will search for some desserts next time. I love exploring new cuisines and learning new skills in the kitchen.
