What important developments took place in the following areas?
1. Scientific instruments:
2. Medicine:
3. Chemistry:
Answer:
Scientific Instrument: invention of the telescope, microscope, barometer, thermometer.
Medicine: Vaccines, penicillin, insulin, aspirin, etc.
Chemistry: Discovery of electrons, radioactivity, fire, making of glass.
What is the relation between chemistry and medicine?
Chemistry and Medicine are extremely interrelated! I will try to keep it simple, but also provide enough detail to satiate deeper interest.
Life itself is a conglomeration of biochemistry and physics— where physics governs the movement of molecules (biophysics, biophysical chemistry), and biochemistry is the study of the chemistry inside of living things; it explains how we see things, feel things, etcetera.
Other medically-related disciplines (like neuroscience or biology) all rely on biochemistry and physics to work. For example, I’ll briefly discuss sight. From physics we understand how our eye lenses work to refract light to focus it on our retina— from biochemistry we understand that this light activates a specific receptor, and there is a cellular signaling cascade pathway that ensues with the end being the initiation of an action potential, which ends up activating a specific part of our brain and through chemical interactions, we produce an image that we see. This whole process is incomprehensibly fast, and a true testament to the complexity of life.
Now onto Medicine. In a gross oversimplification, medicine works to exploit the biochemistry, or alter it to produce the desired effect. So, let’s discuss the class of antidepressants called SSRI’s, or Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors.
The biochemistry behind this is as follows: there is a small gap between our nerve cells called a synapse. To communicate with each other or to pass-along a signal, nerve cells (neurons) release neurotransmitters. These molecules are released into the synapse, where some bind to receptors on the adjacent neuron (to pass-along a signal), and others are either broken down or transported back into the neuron that released them originally, in a process called re-uptake.
This is where the medicine comes in. Drugs like SSRI’s target this process, and stop it. This allows more neutransmitters, in this case serotonin, to remain in the synapse, and available to bind to receptors on the adjacent neuron. Serotonin elicits responses that are associated with happiness. By preventing re-uptake, there is more serotonin to elicit these responses, and thus, we feel happier.
Now theres another part of chemistry to this: the drug itself. The making of drugs is through a process called synthetic chemistry. The drug has to be able to bind to a protein, vesicle, or receptor to prevent re-uptake, so the drug must be designed and synthesized accordingly. This is the kind of work that I do as a Medical Synthetic Chemist, though my work is in creating new, safer, more effective cancer chemotherapeutics— as opposed to drugs like antidepressants.
This is just one of many ways chemistry and medicine overlap. In summary, medicine relies heavily on chemistry and biochemistry; because after all, we treat illness and injury mostly with chemicals (painkillers, sedatives, sleeping pills, chemotherapy, even Neosporin and aloe-gel, to name a few).
