And it is a tremendous gift to all the world’s music cultures from all Africans in the Americas, who continue to integrate “blue” 7ths and 3rds in Soul, Rhythm and Blues, as well as all corners of jazz, from Cool, Lounge and BeBop to House, Pop and Hip-Hop. Interestingly, those flatted sounds do not so much find their way into Ska, Reggae or other Caribe and Latin rhythms, which nevertheless exploit the sultry syncopation, obligate improvisation and mournful legato that African American musicians grafted into the sounds of the Americas.
European and East Asian cultures share a predilection for diatonic scales and widely spaced intervals. The Asian pentatonic scales and Greco-Byzantine hexatonic complement of scales comprise a very tendentious esthetic for their respective cultures of origin. The distinction, in particular, that Europeans and their diaspora make between consonance and dissonance is different or irrelevant in many other music traditions, especially in Turkic, Persian, Arabic, Berber, Punjabi, Bengali and other South Asian, Central Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. All of these are very inflected with microtones, which are fractions of halftones and even of quartertones. Euro-Descendants can barely register, let alone perform, these sliver-like increments. And yet I will say as a Euro-American that we often are wonderstruck by the daring beauty and clear sound of conviction delivered by the music of accomplished musicians in traditions like the Eastern Mediterranean. I am personally crazy for the Lebanese singer Fairouz. But there was a time in my musical youth when her navigation of microtonal melodies would have frustrated me; now they enthrall me. For a few examples— Even in the stolid, diatonic West, simple chromaticism no more daring than a half-step was long interpreted as dissonance. But the most reprehensibly dissonant intervals in Europe of the Middle Ages and Renaissance were the augmented fourth, or tritone, and the augmented eighth. If you try these on a keyboard, with no mediating sounds added, you might easily understand their reprehensibility.
And yet all walls fall some day—the augmented 8th now graces one of the most tenderly lyrical and resolutely tonal works of the 20th-century: the introductory melody of “Appalachian Spring,” Aaron Copland’s heritage suite for ballet, commissioned by Martha Graham. The first three melodic notes, 5 - 1 - 4, are two jumps of a 4th, one right after another, with no contrary motion, which would be jolting enough to a composer from Monteverdi or Purcell’s time, but an octave below the second melodic 4th Copland places a 3rd in the bass, and holds it for a full beat, allowing the 3rd to determine the harmony (tonic 6/4) which means the interval becomes a very intentional augmented 8th, not excused by virtue of appogiatura license. But we regard it as breathtakingly lovely, given our reassurance it will resolve—and resolve it does, to a melodic 3rd, naturally, but undergirded with a 4th in the harmony below—in effect, a resolution to a major 7th, which would have been a felony for Wolfie Mozart! The 4th over the 3rd simply trade functional places by moving physically closer, soaking their Medieval dissonance in lounge-hound intimacy, as though martinis and a hot tub were all that Torquemada needed. This is tour-de-force composition—breaking two rules and taking rude sounds for making new music that awakens old ears to progressions of beauty that startle, consonantly, on every hearing.
