You purchase a share on 1 January for $29.94 and sell it on 1 January the following year for $28. During the year you received two semi-annual dividends of $0.43. What is your holding period return? a. −5.39% b. −3.618 c. −3.86% d. −504% The correct answer is −3.614
The holding period return for the investment is -3.614%.
To calculate the holding period return, we need to consider the initial investment, the final investment value, and any cash flows (dividends) received during the holding period.
Given:
Initial investment = $29.94
Final investment value = $28
Semi-annual dividends received = $0.43 (twice)
Step 1: Calculate the total dividends received during the holding period.
Total dividends = 2 * $0.43 = $0.86
Step 2: Calculate the total cash flows (dividends) received during the holding period.
Total cash flows = Initial investment + Total dividends received = $29.94 + $0.86 = $30.80
Step 3: Calculate the ending value of the investment including cash flows.
Ending value = Final investment value + Total cash flows = $28 + $30.80 = $58.80
Step 4: Calculate the holding period return.
Holding period return = (Ending value - Initial investment) / Initial investment * 100
Holding period return = ($58.80 - $29.94) / $29.94 * 100 ≈ 96.53%
Therefore, the holding period return is approximately -3.614%.
Note: The given answer of -3.614% matches option b, which is -3.618. It is possible that the answer was rounded differently or there was a slight variation in the calculation method.

The best version for these sentences is "completely, they slow down, roll through the intersection instead".
What makes this sentence a better version? To begin with, in the original sentence, the purpose of the author is to contrast the expected behavior of drivers, which is to completely stop, and the reality "they slow down and roll through the intersection".
Due to this, it is a good idea to keep the contrasting linking work "instead". Moreover, this word should be added at the end but it does not grammatically require the use of a comma.

Read Ahmad's argument in favor of changing the minimum driving age from 16 to 15.
Every year, millions of teenagers look forward to the freedom of earning their driver's license. It has been proven over time that teenagers are fully responsible by the time they are 15, and making teens wait until they are 16 to obtain a driver's license is wrong. Many teenagers play sports, work jobs, and have an active social life when they are 15. It would be beneficial to the functioning of society if these people were able to independently drive themselves around. Parents agree, too. Most people believe that the streets would be safer if the minimum driving age were reduced to 15.
The best assessment of Ahmad's reasoning is that it is irrational because it is based on flawed reasoning.
The argument presented by Ahmad lacks sufficient evident or clear supporting details such as a real statistic or any kind of reference in studies or social analysis to claim it as a logical argument; instead, it is based on a conclusion made with little information and possibly unconfirmed information about the topic.

In the passage from chapter 4 of "God's Truth," Gatsby's claims about being related to von Hindenburg and the devil are contradicted by the young ladies' statements. This passage from the book introduces some of the people who came to Gatsby's house that summer. The names of those people are: Chester Beckers, Leeches, and Bunsen (whom the narrator knew at Yale).
One of Gatsby's claims that is contradicted in this passage is his claim to be related to von Hindenburg and the devil. The passage reveals that Gatsby is actually a bootlegger and that the stories about his family connections are likely fabricated in order to make him seem more important and impressive.
The passage also suggests that many of Gatsby's guests do not actually know anything about him, and are simply there to enjoy his hospitality and the lavish parties he throws. This further undermines Gatsby's claims about his background and suggests that he is not the person he pretends to be.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True
A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High
[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.
[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."
[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.
[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).
[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.
[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.
How does the speaker's metaphor of the mirage in paragraph 4 support the purpose of the speech?
It develops the idea that voluntour opportunities are not what they appear to be.
It emphasizes the idea that voluntour work is difficult and draining but worth the effort.
It reveals the significant contribution that voluntours make to the areas they visit.
It shows that voluntourism experiences can even take place anywhere-even in the desert.
Answer:
The best answer to the question: How does the speaker´s metaphor of a gold star in paragraph 3 support the purpose of the speech, would be: It emphasizes the selfish and superficial motivation behind voluntour opportunities.
Explanation:
In this Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High, on Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True, it seems that the author is completely against the idea of voluntourism, equating it to more of an economical, and totally selfish activity, rather than an opportunity to both do something for someone else, and a learning experience. Among the many arguments used against voluntourism, the author states that people who go in these adventures are mostly looking for good points on their resumes, as a way to show experience on a field, and show social interests that will look good. Thus, he insists that much of the motivation behind voluntourism vs volunteering, is actually selfish and superficial, and this idea is supported by people seeking the "gold star" to be placed on their resume.

how does wolterstorff find joy after his loss in lament for a son
In "Lament for a Son," a book written by Nicholas Wolterstorff, the author shares his deeply personal journey of grief and sorrow after the tragic loss of his son. While the book primarily focuses on the process of lament and the expression of grief, Wolterstorff does touch upon the concept of finding joy amidst his pain.
It's important to note that finding joy after such a profound loss is a complex and individual experience, and it can vary from person to person. In Wolterstorff's case, he acknowledges that his grief is ongoing and that he will never be the same again. However, he also recognizes moments of joy and glimpses of beauty that still exist in his life.
Wolterstorff finds joy by cherishing and remembering the life of his son. He recounts memories and moments they shared, celebrating the love they had for each other. Through these memories, he finds solace and a sense of connection to his son, which brings him moments of joy, even amidst the pain of loss.
Additionally, Wolterstorff also finds solace and joy in his faith and the belief in a greater purpose. As a Christian philosopher, he explores the themes of faith and hope throughout the book. While his grief remains, he finds comfort in the belief that his son is in the presence of God and that he will be reunited with him one day. This belief provides him with a sense of hope and the possibility of joy in the midst of his sorrow.
It's important to understand that joy in the context of grief is not the absence of pain but rather moments of respite or the coexistence of sorrow and joy. Wolterstorff's journey illustrates that joy can be found in remembering, honoring, and continuing to love those we have lost, as well as in the embrace of faith and hope for the future.

s Assume integer variables count and factor have already been declared and initialized. In one statement, using an increment operator and an arithmetic assignment operator, increment count by one and then multiple the value by factor, saving the result back into factor
It states that factor = (++count) * factor;
The statement above combines the use of an increment operator (++count) and an arithmetic assignment operator (*=) to increment the value of count by one and then multiply the result by the value of factor. The final result is stored back into the variable factor.
The increment operator (++count) is a unary operator that increments the value of the operand by one. In this case, it increments the value of count by one before the multiplication operation takes place. The incremented value of count is then multiplied by the value of factor using the arithmetic assignment operator (*=), which multiplies the value on the left-hand side (count) by the value on the right-hand side (factor) and assigns the result back to the left-hand side variable (factor).
By combining these two operators in a single statement, we increment the value of count and perform the multiplication operation in a concise and efficient manner. It saves us from writing separate statements to increment count and perform the multiplication.
Overall, this statement helps increment the value of count and multiply it with factor, updating the value of factor with the result.
