The issue with looking up to a celebrity as a role model (regardless of their department of fame) is that you really have no idea what this person is actually like. In the public eye they may appear to be a kind person who does positive things with their fame, but their behaviour in their private lives can differ from this. My biggest issue with the idea of looking up to celebrities is this "I did it, so you can do it too attitude". In reality, this person probably had already been established in some way, whether this be through money, family, or social status. Being 'discovered' doesn't happen in real life. Saying this breeds in young people the toxic desire to be famous.
They are good role models in that they tend to be very talented people who through effort and discipline, obtain great achievements in their respective fields but they shouldn't be thought of as role models in every single aspect of life as they may lack abilities in some areas, and cannot be role models for every single aspect in life.
What are role models?Role models show young people how to live with integrity, optimism, hope, determination, and compassion. They play an essential part in a child’s positive development.
Role models come into young people’s lives in a variety of ways. They are educators, civic leaders, mothers, fathers, clergy, peers, and ordinary people encountered in everyday life. My study showed that being a role model is not constrained to those with fancy titles or personal wealth. Students were quick to state that “a true role model is not the person with the best job title, the most responsibility, or the greatest fame to his or her name.”
