Read the passage below. Look for clues about its text structure.

Swimming in the ocean is different from swimming in a pool. The ocean is so huge there is no way to see where it ends. It is full of waves,
so the water is often rocky. Swimming can be difficult and even dangerous for some people. A pool is smaller than the ocean so it is
possible to see all sides of almost every pool. The water is calm and those who are not good swimmers can usually still have a good time in

Once the snarling and yelping had died down, the victor mused over his triumph.

The general had turned to retrieve his sword from the closet. Rainsford grabbed a coverlet and leaped on to the bed. The infuriated Zarhoff slashed and parried clumsily, impaired by the wine and after-dinner liqueurs. Rainsford jumped to a position before the open window, playing the Matador to Zarhoff's bull. As the animal lunged, the taunter dropped the cape. His feet entangled, the general bellowed as he dropped from the window to become the repast for the baying hounds. Satisfied. Quiet. It was the finest bed, at last.

what do the words gradually nostalgic and continuation have in common?

Answers

Answer:

Gradually nostalgic and continuation are both dealing with the past but in different ways. Nostalgia is remembering the past, and continuation is moving on from it.

Explanation:

The terms "gradually," "nostalgic," and "continuation" share a connection to the idea of time and development.

1. The word "gradually" suggests a gradual change or progression through time. It implies a smooth change from one state or circumstance to another. For instance, by consistently studying, you can steadily raise your grade point average.

2. The adjective "nostalgic" denotes a wistful yearning for the past. It is an emotional reaction brought on by memories and events that have special meaning for the individual. For instance, hearing an old song may make you feel nostalgic for a specific time in your life.

3. The term "continuation" refers to the act of continuing or extending something without break. It implies that a procedure or event is still happening or will last a while. If you're viewing a movie series, for instance, each new installment will continue the plot from the prior film.

In conclusion, these phrases all refer to the passage of time and the gradual unfolding or progression of events, inspire sentimental memories of the past, and signify the persistence or extension of anything. Together, these phrases express the concepts of time, change, and emotional connection.

Read the excerpt from "Paul Revere's Ride.”

He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."

Who is speaking in this excerpt?

Paul Revere
Paul Revere’s friend
a British soldier
a townsperson

Answers

Answer:

A IS CORRECT

Explanation:

The correct option is A. Paul Revere is speaking in this excerpt.

When the British are approaching, Paul Revere advises his friend to use a lamp as a warning. Some locals are aware that the British troops will enter the city at night. The soldiers will arrive by water and march through the land in equal numbers.

What did Paul Revere yell?

In early Boston, Paul Revere worked as a silversmith. He gained notoriety for his midnight trip to alert colonists to the British troops who were preparing for an assault. The anecdotal account has no genuine historical foundation, but it is believed that he cried "The British are coming, the British are coming!" while traveling.

The poem relates a portion of the fictitious story of Paul Revere and is narrated by the Wayside Inn's proprietor. In the poem, Revere instructs a friend to set up signal lanterns at the Old North Church in Boston's North End so he may find out if the British are going to attack by land or sea.

Explain how the explicit and implicit details in the passage help the reader make the following inference: Felix will most likely cast his vote for Simone. In developing your response, make sure you identify and analyze several explicit and implicit details.

Passage: The secret-ballot election for class president was this afternoon, but Felix didn't know how he would be voting. Felix knew this was a big deal, since the class presidents had a major say in how the school was run. While Felix waited for Jamal and Simone to deliver their final speeches, he took out a charcoal pencil and pad and did a quick sketch of Simone, who paced frantically at the back of the room, wringing her hands. Simone spoke first, rambling at the beginning but then slowing down a bit. Her main focus, she said, would be getting more money for art class supplies and more space for the music program — which caused Felix to glance thoughtfully at the trumpet case next to his desk. When it was Jamal's turn, he immediately captivated the audience — tall and handsome, he seemed able to convince anyone of anything, except his best friend, Felix. That's why Jamal liked Felix — he was a freethinker. In his speech, Jamal explained how he wanted to cut back on music and the arts in favor of more science and math, which he said was important for the future of our country. The class applauded wildly, but Felix had already stopped listening and returned to his sketch of Simone.

Answers

Answer:

The reader can make the following inference, "Felix will most likely cast his vote for Simone," because of this part of the excerpt:

"he took out a charcoal pencil and pad and did a quick sketch of Simone, who paced frantically at the back of the room, wringing her hands. Simone spoke first, rambling at the beginning but then slowing down a bit. Her main focus, she said, would be getting more money for art class supplies and more space for the music program — which caused Felix to glance thoughtfully at the trumpet case next to his desk."

Simone claims to want to get more money for art class (Felix is sitting there drawing a charcoal sketch of Simone)

Simone claims to want more space for the music class (Felix glances thoughtfully at his trumpet case)

Jamal wants to cut both art and music and put the money into science and math and even though Felix and Jamal are best friends, Felix has an interest in Simone, art, and music.

"A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of."—Jane Austen

Answer and Explanation:

We cannot consider a good income as the only reason to be happy, since happiness is something you cannot buy and money is a finite thing, which promotes fleeting happiness. However, we cannot disagree that income is one of the factors that profoundly influence people's happiness, even without being the main factor. This is because we are happy when our needs are met, although a good income cannot meet our emotional needs, it is the only factor capable of meeting our physical and economic needs. Without a good income, we will experience difficulties and will not be happy, since love, affection and companionship cannot meet the needs of food, home and many others.

It’s 1933, and the Logans (Cassie, Little Man, and Cassie's older brother) are walking to class on their first day of school.

A long time ago, Cassie’s grandfather purchased 400 acres of land from Harlan Granger’s family. However, they must pay for the taxed acres of land. The entire family pitches in.

The Logans—other than Stacey—don’t like T.J. very much. He reveals that Cassie almost got him in trouble by telling his mother that he had gone to the dancing room in the Wallace store. He got out of it by blaming his brother, Claude, instead, and Claude took a beating for it. The Logans think this is a dirty stunt, but T.J. finds it funny.

Stacey tells everyone to get off the road quickly, and everyone except for Little Man scrambles up the bank and into the forest. Little Man is reluctant to scramble up the bank and get his clothes dirty, but when the school bus drives by and raises the red dust, Little Man ends up getting dirtier than the rest of them. Little Man indignantly demands to know where their bus is, but Stacey tells him that the black kids don’t get a bus.

A white boy named Jeremy approaches the group and greets Stacey shyly. There’s a bit of an awkward silence, and the conversation reveals that school has been in session for a month already for the white kids. Jeremy walks with the Logan children every morning, even though he gets ridiculed and beaten for associating with them. Eventually, they split as Jeremy goes to the white school with his sister Lillian Jean, who regards the Logans with disdain.

The Logans continue on to the black school, which starts later in the year and gets out earlier because the black children have to help their families by working in the cotton fields. A lot of the older kids drop out of school entirely in order to help their parents work the fields. Cassie observes the students around her, who are wearing their Sunday best, even though all their clothes are full of patches, since no one can afford new clothes.

Cassie heads into the fourth grade classroom, which the fourth graders currently share with the first graders because the first grade teacher is held up in Jackson for a few days. Miss Crocker, the fourth grade teacher announces that this year, all the students will get books. This is big news, since most of the students have never handled a book before, other than the family Bible. The Logans are lucky, though, because Mama owns several books. Still, Cassie is excited at the prospect of getting her own book. However, once Miss Crocker reveals the books, Cassie sees that they’re badly worn, and her excitement fades into disappointment.

When it’s Little Man’s turn to take a book, he outrages the teacher by asking if he can get a cleaner copy. Miss Crocker accuses him of putting on airs, so Little Man takes his book and goes back to his seat. However, once he flips over the page and sees what’s written inside, he throws his book down and begins stomping on it. Cassie flips open her own copy and sees that there’s a record of who the book has been checked out to and what the condition of the book is. It turns out that the books are checked out to white children until the condition becomes “Very Poor,” at which point they’re given to black children, or “nigra” as it’s written in Cassie’s book.

Cassie tries to explain to Miss Crocker that Little Man is upset because of the chart, but Miss Crocker remains unsympathetic. She just tells Cassie, “That’s what you are” when Cassie tells her about the “nigra” written in her book. Cassie rejects her book too, and she and Little Man both get whipped.

Cassie tries to tell her mother about the incident when class lets out, but Miss Crocker gets there first, and Cassie overhears their conversation. Mama doesn’t seem to be very upset at her children, however, which frustrates Miss Crocker. Mama then glues paper in the books to cover up the charts, telling Miss Crocker that maybe they shouldn’t just accept the way things are. Miss Crocker, however, disapproves of Mama and thinks of her as a radical. Mama glues paper over the charts in all the books in her seventh grade

based on your willingness to know when to ask for help when needed, id say you’re discerning. you might also consider yourself humble or reasonable.
perhaps you wonder about how you are perceived by others? it’s not a bad thing if you are, just an idea. or maybe you wonder about other peoples ideas.
maybe you hear the voices of those who object injustice, as shown in the media though certain social justice movements.
maybe you see buildings burning or people marching (social movements - i don’t think you need to add your opinion unless you want to)
maybe you want change, or success, or to improve yourself.
don’t be embarrassed to talk about pretending to be a character during a childish game. utilize that reality into an art form. for example, if you want to be a doctor or a nurse, maybe say “i pretend to listen to my future patients hearts.”
maybe say you feel that change is coming.
instead of saying that you’re touching a physical object, try saying something along the lines of “i touch the hearts of those who need encouragement.” if you choose to use a physical object in your work, that’s okay too!
maybe you worry about what the world has come to, or how many lives will be negatively impacted medically, psychologically, or economically as a result of the pandemic.
maybe you cry about people who die, or people who live with dementia, or maybe you cry when someone you love is sad.
I am small and thin. I wonder how many people die a day. I hear the squeaking of the shuffling feet in the subway on a rainy day. I see the man mourning his wife’s loss on the bench next to me. I want to be loved. I am small and thin. I pretend I’m fine. I feel as if the world doesn’t want me. I touch the man’s shoulder in sadness. I worry that he needs me. I cry with him, his tears draining into the metal below. I am small and thin. I understand love now. I say “You’ll be fine.” I dream about high above in the stars. I try to make it all up. I hope they will listen. I am small and thin.

Mrs. Thompson, a middle-aged school teacher, was standing in front of the classroom during a lively discussion on grammar. Suddenly, she stumbled and accidentally dropped her lesson plan on the ground.

One of the students, a young girl named Laura, noticed this and spoke up. "Mrs. Thompson, are you okay?"

Mrs. Thompson looked a bit embarrassed by her clumsiness, but luckily, she was an unflappable person who was used to overcoming unexpected obstacles. "Yes, Laura, I'm fine. Just a little misstep."

The class continued without a hitch and Mrs. Thompson was back to her usual upbeat self. Suddenly, one of the students, a stubborn young boy named Tim, raised his hand and asked a question that had nothing to do with the current lesson.

"Mrs. Thompson, why do we have to learn this boring stuff? It's definitely not going to help us in the real world."

Mrs. Thompson took a deep breath and tried to remain calm. She knew that Tim was an obstinate child, but she was adaptable and knew how to deal with him. "Tim, I understand that this subject may not be your favorite, but it's important to learn it. It will help you improve your language skills and be better at communicating."

Tim rolled his eyes, but Mrs. Thompson didn't let that faze her. She continued teaching the lesson, never losing her composure.

As the class ended, Laura approached Mrs. Thompson.

Chapter 1: The Cobbler's Son
My name was Tommy Stubbins, son of Jacob Stubbins, the cobbler of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh; and I was nine and a half years old. At that time Puddleby was only quite a small town. A river ran through the middle of it; and over this river there was a very old stone bridge, called Kingsbridge, which led you from the market-place on one side to the churchyard on the other.

Sailing-ships came up this river from the sea and anchored near the bridge. I used to go down and watch the sailors unloading the ships upon the river-wall. The sailors sang strange songs as they pulled upon the ropes; and I learned these songs by heart. And I would sit on the river-wall with my feet dangling over the water and sing with the men, pretending to myself that I too was a sailor.

For I longed always to sail away with those brave ships when they turned their backs on Puddleby Church and went creeping down the river again, across the wide lonely marshes to the sea. I longed to go with them out into the world to seek my fortune in foreign lands—Africa, India, China and Peru! When they got round the bend in the river and the water was hidden from view, you could still see their huge brown sails towering over the roofs of the town, moving onward slowly—like some gentle giants that walked among the houses without noise. What strange things would they have seen, I wondered, when next they came back to anchor at Kingsbridge! And, dreaming of the lands I had never seen, I'd sit on there, watching till they were out of sight.
