THE END OF WINTER
As I approached, I startled a group of sparrows that had been feeding in the grass, and they flew up to the safety of an old oak tree. It was still early enough in the year that the branches of the tree were bare. But the bird songs and the warm sun made me feel certain that winter was ending. As I watched, the sparrows dropped from their high perches and settled again in the grass to hunt for food. Like winter, I was just an interruption.
Which is the best description of the difference in how the poem and the story connect the sparrows to the coming of spring?
A.
The poem connects them to dead leaves; the story connects them to the warmth of the sun.
B.
The poem connects them to dead leaves; the story connects their return to the ground to the return of spring.
C.
The poem connects them to leaves returning to the branches; the story connects them to the warmth of the sun.
D.
The poem connects them to leaves returning to the branches; the story connects their return to the ground to the return of spring.

Superhero 101: A Dog's Day
Trace was still thinking about the conversation with his grandmother when he stopped so abruptly that Liam literally collided with him. “Hey, what gives?” Liam asked. “You were this close to wearing my ice cream in your hair. Why’d you stop?”
Tia and Blade had continued walking, but now they were headed back toward their friends to find out why they had stopped. Blade immediately noticed Trace’s countenance and followed his gaze. She was the most intuitive and observant of the group. Suddenly, she gasped.
“What is wrong with you two?” Liam, who was more interested in saving his ice cream than saving the world, asked before they had a chance to explain.
Trace spoke in hushed tones, “Look, over there. It’s Casper. He’s supposed to be in prison. What is he doing at the pet store?”
Liam and Tia looked toward the pet store as the four friends dodged into an alleyway, trying not to look too conspicuous. Casper was obviously in disguise himself with his dyed brown hair and beard. The last thing the group needed was for Casper to realize that he had been spotted by his nemesis. The last time he and Trace had met, Trace and his friends had thwarted Casper's plot to create a deadly toxin designed to help him take over the world. That was three months ago, and now it looked like he had somehow escaped from prison and was up to something equally menacing and ominous.
Casper was leaving the pet store and getting into a car, so the friends hurried to their car. They followed him to an abandoned pet-food manufacturing plant at the edge of town. Once Casper ducked inside, the four friends did the same but were soon confronted by an angry pack of dogs. Trace motioned for his friends to come close to him as he created a shield around them. He remembered the time when Tia had used her superpower to make the group invisible. They had been running from Casper and his henchmen. “Tia, make us invisible!” Trace shouted.
However, the friends’ scent wasn’t invisible, and the dogs could not be deterred. The dogs followed the friends as they made their way to where Casper appeared to be manufacturing something that smelled awful.

A student is writing a report and wants to edit it to make better transitions among the paragraphs. Read the students report and answer the question that follows. President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address in 1863 at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Pennsylvania. The first speaker at the dedication, Edward Everett, orated for more than two hours. President Lincoln spoke after him, and his speech lasted little more than two minutes. Afterward, Everett told Lincoln that he wished he could express in two hours what Lincoln had said in two minutes. Lincoln had delivered one of the most memorable speeches in history. This was fitting, as over 50,000 soldiers had died at the Battle of Gettysburg, a turning point in the Civil War. Lincoln's speech focused on a "new birth of freedom" in the United States, as he invoked the Declaration of Independence and its principles of liberty and equality. He stated clearly the need for the nation to be both united and free. The oldest copies of the speech are different from one another. The Library of Congress has two copies, and the others were recorded by Lincoln well after the speech. One copy was made for Everett, but "Bancroft" and "Bliss" versions also exist. The "Bliss" version is carved into a wall of the Lincoln Memorial in our nation's capital. Choose the sentence that provides the BEST transition between paragraphs 2 and 3. A Lincoln was certain about his vision for the course of the nation. B It is not exactly certain which words Lincoln spoke that day. C The spirit of Lincoln's speech is remembered well today. D Lincoln's speech had surprised the crowd.

Every single time we're not together
And I know that I've been gone from everything
But I needed that
Say you wish that you were kissing me
It comes out of nowhere, whenever
But I'm kinda sick and tired, you're so selfish
Say that I'm not coming back to you
But wait, don't leave
Hate that it's so easy for you
Wait, I can't see

You're really good at tricking me
Makin' me believe I'm not enough
And I'm always so confident
'Til you come and trip me up
Why you so caught up with fixing me?
You know that's something that I really hate
You're the only thing about me that should change
You're my one mistake, hmm

Which theme does this passage from The Hobbit develop?
The dwarves indeed no longer needed any urging. All were now eager to explore the hall while they had the
chance, and willing to believe that, for the present, Smaug was away from home. Each now gripped a lighted torch;
and as they gazed, first on one side and then on another, they forgot fear and even caution. They spoke aloud, and
cried out to one another, as they lifted old treasures from the mound or from the wall and held them in the light
caressing and fingering them.
O Good always overcomes evil.
Seemingly ordinary individuals can do extraordinary things.
