Answers

Daisy's statement about Jordan spending weekends at her home and the home influence being good for her is ironic because Daisy herself is not a good role model and has a loose and careless lifestyle. The home influence she is referring to is not actually good, and the parties and social events that take place at her home are often wild and morally questionable. The idea that Jordan will be positively influenced by such an environment is therefore ironic.

What happened in Julius Caesar?

Characters in Julius Caesar frequently consider their conduct in reference to conventional notions of manly strength and virtue. The play is focused with problems of masculinity. These well-known concepts are presented in surprisingly unclear ways throughout the play.

For instance, even if Julius Caesar has flaws that caused people to mock him, he nonetheless inspires dread and remains unfazed by the prospect of being assassinated. In addition to exploring political intrigue, Julius Caesar also explores the internal and familial conflicts that may lurk beneath it. Shakespeare is careful to depict the inner conflicts of important characters as they agonize over their course of action and even receive advice from their wives.

Music and the Brain

From the beginning of recorded history, music has been created and enjoyed by people. Even early man carved flutes from bones. Thomas Jefferson was known to play his violin to help him formulate the most effective word choices as he wrote the Declaration of Independence. Albert Einstein, considered one of the most intelligent men who ever lived, also played the violin. He was said to have figured out his most challenging mathematical formulas by playing his violin. Today scientists are discovering that the study of music, playing an instrument, or participating through singing can actually help develop our brains. No wonder Einstein and Jefferson, among many, found music helpful in problem solving.

There was a time in America's history when music was a centerpiece of family life. There were no televisions, radios, or other forms of electronic entertainment. Social life often involved someone playing the piano or another instrument while guests sang along or listened for enjoyment. Therefore, if parents could afford the opportunity, their children were encouraged to learn how to play an instrument. Taking music lessons did not mean a child was expected to become a professional musician. However, it usually meant the kids learned the daily discipline of practice.

Recent brain research has shown some surprising benefits as a result of formal musical training. Learning to play a musical instrument appears to develop parts of the brain that can even influence academic results. The studies indicate that the earlier a child begins training, the more benefits there are. One such study showed that children who began musical studies before the age of seven had a more developed brain in the region where language production and auditory processing take place. Scientists believe there is mounting evidence to show that early musical training can improve brain function.

A research team from Northwestern University observed that to achieve the positive brain development from musical training, music students had to be active participants. There were differences found between the kids who attended a more passive music appreciation class, and the ones who learned to play instruments. It was the active production of music that rewired the brain. Using electrodes on the students' heads, scientists were able to see how actively the brain responded when students generated music.

Neuroscientists have suggested that playing an instrument, especially at an early age, can improve how the brain interprets sensory information. Music (singing or playing an instrument) also positively affects memory.

A special community music program in a low-income area of Los Angeles showed a higher success rate of students going on to college than students in the area who did not participate in this music education.

Playing a musical instrument engages muscular movement, requires coordination, and employs various senses. This intricate process of making music creates motion and emotional response. According to one scientist's studies, intense musical training increases not only the volume of the brain, but also improves the connections between the hemispheres of the brain.

Today there is a trend toward instrumental lessons being less of a priority than in decades past. In many cases, families cannot afford private lessons or the time it takes from the family schedule. Fortunately, many schools still provide classes for chorus, orchestra, and band, which help promote this educational opportunity. Families keep busy today with most parents working full-time outside the home. Children are also busy with various extracurricular activities, competing forms of technological entertainment, and year-round sports activities.

In the letter from Robert Walton to his sister dated September 12th in Frankenstein, Walton encounters the creature mourning the death of Victor Frankenstein and states

“It is well that you come here to whine over the desolation that you have made. You throw a torch into a pile of buildings, and when they are consumed, you sit among the ruins and lament the fall. Hypocritical fiend! If he whom you mourn still lived, still would he be the object, again would he become the prey, of your accursed vengeance. It is not pity that you feel; you lament only because the victim of your malignity is withdrawn from your power.”

Walton’s opinion of the creature’s mourning is one of indignation and disbelief because the creature is asking Victor to forgive his transgressions. Think about Walton’s statement and then follow the directions for this discussion.

Answers

It's conceivable that the creature's grief over Victor's passing is sincere and not merely a ruse to control Walton or exact retribution. This viewpoint draws attention to the creature's complicated personality and encourages readers to analyze his motives and actions more carefully.

In his statement, Walton accuses the monster of what.

Walton accuses the creature of wreaking havoc and destruction before hypocritically lamenting the results of his own deeds. He believes that the creature is not truly repentant, and that its grief is just a reaction to Victor's passing.

What makes the creature a hypocritical devil, according to Walton?

Walton refers to the creature as a hypocrite fiend since he thinks that the creature is just lamenting Victor's passing because he is no longer able to exact retribution on him.

What does Walton think of the creature's grief?

Walton thinks the creature is hypocritical and not sincerely repentant for his misdeeds, therefore his opinion of the creature's grief is one of outrage and incredulity.

how does greed frame motives the criminal in black peter a red headed league

Answers

Answer:

One of the more predominant themes in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories is man versus man. 'The Red-Headed League' is no exception. In addition, one finds themes of reason and greed as Sherlock prevents another crime based on minuscule evidence.

Man Versus Man

Based on the reputation Sherlock Holmes has garnered through literature and the movies, it is hard to imagine anyone presenting him with a difficult challenge. He has shown an aptitude to solve crimes and mysteries before the clues have even been revealed. In the story 'The Red-Headed League,' Sherlock confronts an individual with whom he has 'had one or two little turns.' These previous encounters provide incentive for Sherlock to capture this villain. It also enhances the theme of man versus man.

Sherlock must prevent the antagonist, John Clay, from stealing gold bullion from 'one of the principal London banks.' With John Clay's plan already in motion, Sherlock looks for clues that will help him develop a counter move. When Sherlock finally confronts John Clay, he admits that his 'idea was very new and effective.' Clay, in turn, gives credit to Sherlock for having 'done the thing very completely. I must compliment you.' Although they go at each other as adversaries, trying to outwit the other, when their conflict is resolved, they acknowledge the other's talents. But what drives this conflict?

Greed

Greed comes in to play in the story on two different fronts. The first is with the pawnbroker, Jabez Wilson. He becomes Sherlock's client. He explains to Sherlock that he has 'a business already,' but was still enticed by earning four pounds a week to 'copy out the Encyclopedia Brittannica.' When this supposed job terminates, Vincent is upset at losing 'four pound a week.' Despite having his own business and employing an assistant, he bemoans the loss of this additional, yet minimal, income. The lure of money creates his current predicament.

John Clay, Sherlock's adversary, is motivated by illegally acquiring thousands in gold bullion. John Clay is a habitual criminal who is known for being a 'murderer, thief, smasher, and forger.' Knowing that all that gold sits unattended in the cellar of a bank is too big of a lure for a criminal such as Clay. It motivates him to contrive a plan to lure out the pawnbroker from his house so he can dig a tunnel from that basement to the bank. All in an effort to become rich. Greed motivates both characters to act in a manner that places them in some difficulty.

Man Versus Self

Sherlock is known for his adherence to, and belief in, logic. This practice is evident as he makes his observations while attempting to solve the mystery behind the red-headed league. Watson mentions to Sherlock at the conclusion of the story that he 'reasoned it out beautifully.' Watson also notes that Sherlock's 'exactness and astuteness represented. . . the reaction against the poetic and contemplative mood which occasionally predominated him.' With these words, Watson indicates that there is a conflict within Sherlock in which reason battles against his artistic nature.

In 'The Red-headed League' Sherlock attends a performance 'gently waving his long, thin fingers in time to the music.' He is enthralled by the music. It isn't until the 'lust of the chase would suddenly come upon him, and that his brilliant reasoning power would rise.' Sherlock needs cases such as this to engage his reasoning prowess. Perhaps he uses music as a means to balance the two sides of his personality, but when he goes without the mental challenge, it wears on him, and he finds life to be a bit dull and boring.
