A Three-Point Turn
Chapter 1
"You know, hardly anyone ever needs to do a three-point turn anymore," said Justin, trying to help Becky calm down.
"Oh, so it's not a useful skill AND I am probably going to fail the driving test because I can't do it anyway," Becky said, raising her voice for emphasis. "That should make me feel like a million bucks when I flunk."
Justin was riding with Becky so she could take her driving test. He had volunteered for the job because he thought she would be less nervous with him than with their mom, but so far, he wasn't sure he was making any difference.
"Slow down, your turn is coming up here," he said, looking ahead.
"I know, I know," she replied, "I've been here before remember—the last time I flunked."
Justin was pretty sure if he had let her miss the turn, things would only have deteriorated further, but he wasn't sure he was fond of being the scapegoat for Becky's anxiety.
"Listen, you need to take a few deep breaths," he said, hoping he could help her at least relax a bit. "Being nervous won't help you with the three-point turn or anything else you have to do. Hey, did you just take that turn without your turn signal on?" This was going to be harder than he thought.
"Stop yelling at me," Becky replied, clearly frustrated, "I can't concentrate."
"Look, you need to stop and get yourself together here," Justin started. "It is not just about passing the driving test. I don't want to get in an accident, so pull into that parking lot."
Becky drove into the office building's parking lot where Justin was pointing. Justin knew they were less than a mile from the licensing office, and if she continued in this condition, he'd be having this same discussion three months from now when she tried the test again for the third time.
"You need to get a grip," he started after she put the car in park, "because you have studied and practiced driving all year. You know this stuff inside and out, backwards and forwards. What are you so nervous about?"
"I don't know, I don't know," Becky wailed, resting her head on the steering wheel. "I just get so tired of failing."
Listening quietly as Becky sobbed, Justin realized this was about much more than a driving test. He also knew if he didn't find a way to help Becky things would just get worse.
Chapter 2
Justin took a deep breath and collected his thoughts. Becky was an unbelievably consistent straight-A student. It was Justin who got the bad grades in school, and Justin who had to repeat every math class he'd ever taken. It was Justin who wished he could get the grades Becky got. Some things came easier for Justin: He was athletic, handy with tools, and good at making the best of whatever life threw at him. Mom called him her "lemons into lemonade" kid. But for the most part, Becky succeeded easily, whereas Justin had to work and work to just get a passing grade.
Rather than having Becky catalogue all the things she supposedly "failed" at, Justin decided to try an alternative approach, one that wouldn't remind him of all the ways he had failed.
"Okay, Becky, let's assume for a moment you fail this test again. What is the worst thing that could happen?" he asked.
"I would be the oldest kid at school without a license and be humiliated," she replied. Justin thought he heard a bit of panic in her voice but continued with his plan.
"Yes, but won't we still have to drive to school together for at least one more year anyway?" he asked.
"Yes, but..." she started.
"And who will know, if you don't tell anyone except your friends, that you don't have your license? You know Mom can't afford another car just for you, right?"
"Yes," she said quietly.
"So what difference does it make, really," he said. "Another three months to wait in the grand scheme of your life doesn't seem like all that long, right?"
"I suppose not," she said.
Justin could tell she was breathing more slowly now. "Besides," he said, "I would miss all the practice driving with you," and for good measure he reached over and pinched her arm.
"Ow," she said, hitting back at him, "that hurt."
"So let's go do this, okay?
"Okay," she said. Becky cranked up the car, backed slowly out of the parking spot and drove up to the parking lot's exit. Justin noticed, as they waited for the traffic to clear, that she had remembered the turn signal.
Which is true of both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2?
Both have multiple major conflicts to develop.
Both include mainly one character's point of view.
Both rely mainly on the narrator to resolve the conflict.
Both rely on internal thoughts to develop both characters.
Noah began racing go-karts when he was just six years old. Noah has traveled to other states to race, win, and finish in the top five, an impressive accomplishment for anyone but especially for a young driver. He now races a 1934 Ford Legends Coupe, a car that weighs 1,000 pounds and goes faster than 100 miles per hour. Noah regularly competes against drivers who are three times older than he is, but he does not let that intimidate him. He explained in one news article, "I have been racing against older people all my life. When you strap on a helmet, you are no longer a 13-year-old kid, you are a racecar driver. The other drivers don't treat me like a kid. They treat me the same as the other drivers on the track." He has the nickname "Little Gator" partly because of his size and partly because of Gatorland's sponsorship over the last several years.
In paragraph 2, Noah says, "I have been racing against older people all my life. When you strap on a helmet, you are no longer a 13-year-old kid, you are a racecar driver."
What is the implicit meaning of his words? (5 points)
a. I am very talented because I am able to race against adults.

c. All racecar drivers have to wear helmets regardless of age.
d. Older racers are embarrassed to compete against a kid.

Based on information in the article, which best describes the difference between the child labor rates in Nepal and Mongolia?
A.Child labor rates have increased in Mongolia since 1990, but decreased in Nepal since 1990.
B.Child labor rates have increased in Mongolia since 1990, but stayed the same in Nepal since 1990.
C.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but decreased in Mongolia since 1990.
D.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but stayed the same in Mongolia since 1990.
In 2000, there were 127 million children working in Asia. By 2004, that number had fallen to 122 million. Officials are pleased that child labor rates have dropped, but they say the decline isn't happening fast enough.
Those numbers came from a recent report from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The report focused on South Asia, which includes Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other nations. It concluded that despite the decrease in the number of working children ages five to 14, South Asia remains a child labor hot spot.
The report discussed child labor in several nations and identified Nepal as one of the worst offenders. As of 2004, almost 40 percent of Nepalese children aged 10 to 14 were working. Many continue to do strenuous physical labor in mines, quarries, and carpet factories. Still, even in Nepal, child labor rates are declining; they had been near 50 percent in 1990.
The Philippines has improved, but problems remain in some industries. Many Filipino children still work in fireworks production, deep-sea fishing, and mining. The country has a national action plan to change this.
"The [anti-child labor] laws are all there," said Filipino Undersecretary of Labor and Employment Manuel G. Imson. Imson says that the government is working with the police to enforce these laws.
In some cases, child labor has emerged where it was previously nonexistent. There were few or no child laborers in Mongolia until 1990; today, up to 10,000 children there work in gold, coal, and mineral mines. Kh. Ganbaatar, executive director of the Mongolian Employers' Federation, blames the problem on economic changes as well as on natural disasters. Several years ago, winter storms killed millions of livestock. This made it harder for families to maintain their traditional herding way of life. Many of these families were forced to send their children to work.
In fact, child labor often develops because area families cannot make ends meet and need extra income. In other cases, parents want to send their children to school but cannot afford the related fees.
"A large number of working poor means that we have a large number of people who are unable to support children [going] to school," said Panudda Boonpala, senior child labor specialist at the ILO.
In August, government representatives from nearly 40 countries as well as workers' and employers' organizations attended an ILO conference. Topics on their agenda included migration, competitiveness, productivity, and youth employment (child labor). At a session on youth employment, participants watched a video that showed children working at a gold mine in Mongolia.
The ILO says that it will try to end some of the worst forms of child labor within 10 years. Its officials point out that attitudes about working children have changed in Asia. This is contributing to the reduction in child labor rates.
"I think 10 years ago there was lots of denial," Panudda said. Still, she said, nations will not be able to end child labor unless they are willing to put a lot of effort and funding into the fight against it.
Answer: C.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but decreased in Mongolia since 1990.

The giver-Compare and contrast Jonas’s neighborhood with yours I can't cuz I don't know much bout my neighborhood cuz I never go outside and pay attention
Explanation:
It is understandable that you may not be able to compare and contrast Jonas's neighborhood from "The Giver" with your own since you do not have much information about your neighborhood. However, I can provide some general comparisons and contrasts based on the information provided in the book.
In Jonas's neighborhood, everything is controlled and regulated by the community. The elders make all the decisions, and there is no room for individuality or personal choice. In contrast, in many modern neighborhoods, residents have more freedom to make their own decisions and live their lives as they see fit.
The houses in Jonas's community are all identical and are assigned to families based on their needs, whereas in many neighborhoods, homes come in various shapes and sizes, and individuals or families can choose the one that suits them best.
In Jonas's community, there are no animals or pets, and nature is not appreciated or valued. In contrast, many modern neighborhoods have parks, gardens, and green spaces where people can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. Additionally, pets are often an important part of many families' lives.
In Jonas's community, there is no music, art, or other forms of creative expression. Everything is functional and designed to serve a specific purpose. In contrast, many modern neighborhoods have a vibrant arts and culture scene, with museums, theaters, and other venues offering a variety of entertainment options.
In conclusion, while there are some similarities between Jonas's neighborhood and modern neighborhoods, there are also significant differences in terms of individual freedom, appreciation for nature and creativity, and the importance placed on pets and animals.
