Explanation:

The Modern State, whether absolutist or constitutional, relied on modern science to achieve its goals. Social Contract Theory, epitomized by Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, provided rational and humanist justification for the use of power by the state. Modern science, already rational, became more humanist, increasingly embracing the use of technology to better human lives. Science also increasingly came under the control of the state, although some science promoters resisted. The Enlightenment, with its rational and humanistic focus, seemed to embrace the growing role of the state, but only when the state was reformed in significant ways to achieve progress for humans and natural rights. Why did the Enlightenment come to embody the concept of reform of the modern state?

Answers

Answer:

Because the Enlightenment believed that concepts related to the reform of the modern state would promote more economic and political freedom to citizens.

Explanation:

Modern state is the term used to describe the union of European feuds, which were finalized at the end of feudalism. Modern states had a more abtangent political structure that benefits citizens, but this structure was still exploratory, mainly because of the people's duties towards the monarchy. It was necessary for modern states to undergo economic, political and social reform, so that citizens could actually have economic and political freedom. This kind of freedom was strongly advocated by the Enlightenment, who believed that they could contribute to the management of modern states if those states underwent this reform and people could, in fact, live fully.

How Baron de Bastrop help Stephen Austin with his Texas colony?

After arriving in Texas, Bastrop chose to live in San Antonio. He once served on the ayuntamiento and operated a freight company (town council). By assisting Moses Austin in obtaining a contract to transport immigrants into Spanish Texas in 1820, Bastrop contributed to permanently altering Texas history.

Govenor Antonio Martinez rejected Moses Austin's plea for authorization to colonize when he first arrived in San Antonio. Austin's petition was approved when Bastrop, who had previously met Ausin in New Orleans, intervened on his favor.

Bastrop was named land commissioner with the power to grant land certificates in Stephen Austin's colony as a result of his intervention on behalf of Moses and his ongoing assistance to Stephen.

Explain why William Rufus was
able to defeat the rebellion of
1088.
You may use the following in your
answer:
• Bishop Odo
• the Church in England.
You must also use information of
your own.
12 marks

Answers

Answer: One way in which William Rufus defeated the 1088 rebellion was because of his tactics. Firstly he managed to effectively ‘buy off’ many Norman barons in Eastern Normandy. He did this by raising an army of his knights in England and demanding the money from their knight service rather than take them to Normandy. He then used this money to bribe Normans to not support his brother, Robert Curthose. This would have caused the rebellion to fail as it would starve Odo and Robert of vital military support therefore weakening them and reducing their numbers.  Another example of William’s tactics was his promise to his English subjects that he would restore many Anglo-Saxon laws. He promised lower taxes and an end to many of the hated ‘forest laws’. This would have helped weaken the rebellion as it would given support to William’s cause. Many would have joined local militias to fight off the rebels as they would have wanted William to stay in power to end these hated Norman laws.  A final example of this was his six week siege of Pevensey Castle. This is where Odo and Robert of Mortain were based and William managed to surround the castle and starve them of supplies. This would have weakened the rebellion, as it was huge defeat for them and led to the capture of two of its leaders (Odo and Robert of Mortain).  This victory would have boosted William’s popularity in England and would have made many nobles less likely to rebel against him as it looked as if his victory was inevitable.

Another way in which he defeated the rebellion was because of his support within the Church. William had been accepted as his father’s successor by Archbishop Lanfranc and was coronated by him without the authorisation of the Witan. This would have caused the rebellion to weaken as Lanfranc had so much power that many would have feared fighting against a king with the backing of God. By fighting William they could potentially be excommunicated from the Church – this fear would have stopped many joining Odo therefore weakening it. Another example of this support can be seen in the west, when Roger de Lacy and Roger de Montgomery were defeated by a holy army raised by Bishop Wulfstan. This would have caused the rebellion to fail as it prevented these forces on the Marcher borders from joining with those in Norwich, Somerset and Wiltshire.

A final way in which the rebellion was defeated was because William captured and exiled Odo. As various rebellions were being crushed, Odo and his brother Robert held up at Pevsensey castle. After being captured there, Odo escaped to Rochester Castle where he held out hoping that Robert Curthose would arrive from Normandy with an army. Odo was effectively abandoned by Robert and was forced to surrender due to lack of supplies and the threat of disease. He was then stripped of his lands, titles and exiled. This would have resulted in the rebellion failing as it left the rebels without a leader or any structure. It was a symbol that William had been victorious and many rebels would have lost any hope to keep fighting.

Paul of Tarsus played a major role in early Christianity because A) he converted Constantine to Christianity. B) he created the office of the Pope.

Answers

Paul of Tarsus, also known as Saint Paul, played a significant role in early Christianity, although he did not convert Constantine to Christianity nor create the office of the Pope.

Paul of Tarsus, also known as Saint Paul, played a significant role in early Christianity, although he did not convert Constantine to Christianity nor create the office of the Pope. Paul was a zealous persecutor of Christians before he experienced a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, which led him to become one of the most influential figures in the development of Christianity.
Paul traveled extensively throughout the Roman Empire, preaching the gospel and establishing churches, and his letters, which make up a significant portion of the New Testament, provide crucial theological insights and guidance for early Christian communities. Paul emphasized the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and the role of grace in salvation, and his teachings on the resurrection and the role of the church as the body of Christ continue to shape Christian doctrine and practice today.
While Constantine is often credited with legalizing Christianity and making it the official religion of the Roman Empire, it was not solely due to Paul's influence. Constantine's conversion is thought to have been influenced by a variety of factors, including political and military motivations, as well as his own personal spiritual journey. Likewise, the office of the Pope did not emerge until several centuries later, and was the result of a complex historical process rather than the work of a single individual.
Overall, Paul's contributions to early Christianity were immense, and his legacy continues to influence the faith to this day. His teachings on the nature of Christ, the importance of faith, and the role of the church helped to shape the theology and practice of Christianity in its formative years, and continue to be studied and debated by scholars and believers alike.

Answers

The unequal tax burden between the estates was an economic cause of the French Revolution.

It refers to the stark disparity in tax obligations imposed on the different social classes or "estates" in pre-revolutionary France. The First and Second Estates (clergy and nobility) enjoyed numerous tax exemptions and privileges, while the burden of taxation fell heavily on the Third Estate (commoners). This economic inequality exacerbated the financial strain on the lower classes and contributed to widespread discontent. The unequal tax burden became a symbol of the unfair distribution of wealth and power, fueling the desire for economic justice and social equality among the populace. Ultimately, this economic grievance played a significant role in sparking the revolutionary fervor that led to the overthrow of the ancien régime.

The cause of the French Revolution that is described as "unequal tax burden between the estates" can be categorized as both social and economic.

1. Social Cause: The French society was divided into three estates, with the First Estate being the clergy, the Second Estate being the nobility, and the Third Estate consisting of the commoners. The First and Second Estates enjoyed privileges and exemptions from taxes, while the burden of taxation fell primarily on the Third Estate. This created social inequality and resentment among the commoners who were already struggling with poverty and high taxes.

2. Economic Cause: The unequal tax burden placed on the Third Estate was an economic issue. The commoners, who made up the majority of the population, were burdened with heavy taxes, while the privileged classes, such as the clergy and nobility, were exempt or paid significantly lower taxes. This economic disparity exacerbated the financial difficulties faced by the Third Estate and led to their dissatisfaction with the existing system.

Why are folk arts important and how do these represents our country?

Answers

Answer:

Traditionally produced by people from a lower socio-economic background working within their local communities, folk art is often found dancing around the edges of the mainstream art world. Often seen as craft, it has a reputation as being a form of ‘low’ art. The distinction between folk art and ‘mainstream’ art has been emphasised – and embedded – by art institutions, whose historical works endeavour to show either the lives and faces of the upper-classes, or the lives of the working-classes through the eyes of the middle- or upper-classes. Folk art expresses cultural identity by conveying shared community values and aesthetics. It encompasses a range of utilitarian and decorative media, including cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal and more. If traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms. Folk art reflects traditional art forms of diverse community groups — ethnic, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age- or gender-based — who identify with each other and society at large. Folk artists traditionally learn skills and techniques through apprenticeships in informal community settings, though they may also be formally educated. Folk art are simple, direct, and mostly always colorful.

Influence on mainstream art

Folk artworks, styles and motifs have inspired various artists. For example, Pablo Picasso was inspired by African tribal sculptures and masks, while Natalia Goncharova and others were inspired by traditional Russian popular prints called luboks.[4] In music, Igor Stravinsky’s seminal The Rite of Spring was inspired by pagan religious rites.
