Write an original 750 essay explaining your view of the Missouri Compromise

Answers

Answer 1

Answer: The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a law that tried to address growing sectional tensions over the issue of slavery. By passing the law, which President James Monroe signed, the U.S. Congress admitted Missouri to the Union as a state that allowed slavery, and Maine as a free state. It also banned slavery from the remaining Louisiana Purchase lands located north of the 36º 30’ parallel (the southern border of Missouri). The Missouri Compromise would remain in force for just over 30 years before it was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled in the Dred Scott decision that the compromise was unconstitutional, setting the stage for the Civil War.

Pro- and Anti-Slavery Factions in Congress

When the Missouri Territory first applied for statehood in 1818, it was clear that many in the territory wanted to allow slavery in the new state. Part of the more than 800,000 square miles bought from France in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, Missouri was known as the Louisiana Territory until 1812, when it was renamed to avoid confusion with the newly admitted state of Louisiana.

Missouri’s bid to become the first state west of the Mississippi River, and to allow slavery within its borders, set off a bitter debate in a Congress that was—like the nation itself—already divided into pro- and anti-slavery factions.

In the North, where abolitionist sentiment was growing, many people opposed the extension of the institution of slavery into new territory, and worried that adding Missouri as a slave state would upset the balance that currently existed between slave and free states in the Union. Pro-slavery Southerners, meanwhile, argued that new states, like the original 13, should be given the freedom to choose whether to permit slavery or not.

During the debate, Rep. James Tallmadge of New York proposed an amendment to the statehood bill that would have eventually ended slavery in Missouri and set free the existing enslaved workers living there. The amended bill passed narrowly in the House of Representatives, where Northerners held a slight edge. But in the Senate, where free and slave states had exactly the same number of senators, the pro-slavery faction managed to strike out Tallmadge’s amendment, and the House refused to pass the bill without it.

much of africa was colonized by european powers by the end of the 19th century. why did some africans support the colonization movement?

Answers

Some Africans supported colonization because they believed it would bring modernization and development, as well as protection and security.

The colonization of Africa by European powers in the 19th century was driven by various factors, including economic interests, strategic competition, and ideological beliefs. While many Africans resisted colonization, there were also some who supported it, albeit for different reasons.

One reason some Africans supported colonization was the belief that European rule would bring about modernization and development. At the time, Africa was seen as a continent of backwardness, and many Africans believed that the introduction of European technology, education, and institutions would help to bring them into the modern world.

This belief was fueled in part by the fact that European colonial powers often presented themselves as enlightened and progressive, and portrayed their rule as a civilizing mission.

Another reason some Africans supported colonization was the desire for protection and security. Prior to colonization, many African societies were characterized by political instability, inter-tribal conflict, and the threat of external invasion. Some Africans saw the arrival of European colonial powers as a way to establish stability and security, and to gain protection from rival groups and external threats.

It is important to note, however, that support for colonization was not universal among Africans, and that many opposed it vehemently. Those who supported colonization often did so for pragmatic reasons, rather than out of genuine enthusiasm for European rule.

Moreover, the benefits promised by colonial powers often failed to materialize, and the costs of colonization, including exploitation, oppression, and loss of autonomy, were substantial.

What was the aim of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930?

The primary aim of the legislation was to protect American businesses and farmers from foreign competition during the Great Depression. However, the tariffs triggered a global trade war, with other countries imposing retaliatory tariffs on American goods, leading to a decrease in international trade and worsening the economic conditions of the Great Depression.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 ultimately resulted in a significant reduction in global trade and is widely regarded as a contributing factor to the depth and length of the Great Depression. Why would someone make this

the purpose?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Professor Cobb's point can be valid if we consider the possibility that even if the document in question is not genuine, it may still reflect certain aspects of today's society concerning black and brown people. While historical authenticity is crucial, it is essential to acknowledge that the document's content might resonate with current social issues faced by marginalized communities. It could highlight enduring systemic biases, racial discrimination, or unequal treatment that persist in various forms. Professor Cobb's argument invites us to critically examine the document's themes and consider their relevance within our contemporary context.

When contemplating why someone would fabricate such a document, several potential purposes come to mind. Firstly, it might serve as a thought-provoking tool, aiming to shed light on historical injustices and their echoes in modern society. By presenting a fictional account rooted in real historical experiences, the intention could be to prompt conversations, foster empathy, and encourage discussions on racial equality. Secondly, the document could be a work of creative expression, seeking to explore the human experience and provoke emotional responses. Lastly, it is possible that someone might create such a document to deceive or manipulate others, exploiting sensitive issues for personal gain or to incite unrest. However, further investigation and analysis would be necessary to determine the true motives behind its creation.

In conclusion, while the authenticity of the document remains uncertain, Professor Cobb raises a valid point by urging us to examine its content in relation to present-day experiences of black and brown communities. Regardless of its origins, the document could provide insights into persistent societal issues, serving as a catalyst for discussions and reflections on racial inequalities. Understanding the purpose behind its creation requires careful examination and consideration of the broader context, encompassing educational, artistic, or potentially manipulative intentions.

Answers

a

the power of the church and class is all in the rule of law

The Communist Manifesto outlined a society where the government dissolved all forms of rule. Hence, Option (A) is correct.

The Communist Manifesto, written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, advocated for the establishment of a communist society where all forms of ruling classes would be dissolved.

Marx and Engels argued for the overthrow of the bourgeoisie, the capitalist class, by the proletariat, the working class.

They envisioned a society where private ownership of the means of production would be abolished, and the concept of social classes would cease to exist.

In such a society, there would be no need for traditional forms of government or ruling classes, as power would be held collectively by the workers themselves.

Thus, by dissolving all forms of rule, the Communist Manifesto aimed to create a classless society where the proletariat would have control over their own labor and resources.

Why do you think this "shot" was heard around the world"?

What made it so important to people around the world who were not directly

This "shot" may also represent the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who started the second world war that involved several countries and even created the basis for the second world war.

2. The American revolution showed that it was possible for a colony to come into conflict with the country that dominated it and win by becoming independent. This inspired colonies across the European, African and Asian continents to fight for their freedoms, even though it seemed unlikely that they would win.

Problem #2: The Borda Count Method of Voting A method of voting that we didn't discuss in class is the Borda Count, a plurative method of voting in which the voters are allowed to rank the candidates by how much they prefer them. When counting the votes, a candidate receives 1 point for each voter who ranked that candidate as their highest preference, 2 points for each voter who ranked them second, 3 for each voter who ranked them third, and so on. The candidates are then ranked in the social preference ranking based on how many points they received in total, with lower point totals (indicating that the voters had a higher preference for the candidate) being more preferred. Example: there are three voters, voting on candidates Xavier, Yolanda, and Zoe. Xavier is two voters' first choice and one voter's second choice: he gets 4 points. Yolanda is two voters second choice and one voter's third choice; she gets 7 points. Zoe is one voter's first choice and two voters' third choice; she gets 7 points also. The social preference ranking is that Xavier is preferred to Yolanda and Zoe, who are indifferent to each other. ( X Y Z ) Now consider three voters, who have four choices, A, B, C, and D, with the following preferences: Alice: A>B>C>D Bob: A>B>C>D Carol: C>D>B>A a) What are the results of a Borda Count vote between options A, B and Conly? List the point totals each choice receives, and the resulting social preference ranking. You may assume all votes cast are truthful and complete (each voter lists a first second, and third choice). Each choice will receive 1-3 points from each ballot, since there are only 3 candidates in the vote. b) What are the results of a Borda Count vote between all four choices? List the point totals each choice receives, and the resulting social preference ranking. You may assume all votes cast are truthful and complete. Each choice will receive 1-4 points per ballot this time.c) Parts a) and b) illustrate a violation of one of the Arrow axioms. Which axiom is violated?
