The Ornithopter Many people know Leonardo da Vinci today as an artist, and it is true that he was indeed a great painter and sculptor, but he was also an inventor and one of the first individuals in recorded history to draft detailed plans for a flying machine. In order to make a living, Leonardo often depended upon wealthy individuals who would commission work from him. That means they would hire him and pay him to create specific work they wanted. In 1482, when he was 30 years old, Leonardo heard of an opportunity to work for Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. The duke, however, did not want a painter; he wanted a military engineer to help him defend the city against its enemies. This was an excellent opportunity that would pay Leonardo well, but Leonardo was a peaceful man. He considered war to be “a beastly madness.” He preferred to make things of beauty. Leonardo made the decision that he could tolerate making weapons if the resources the duke could provide would also allow him to create things he loved. He sent a letter to the duke detailing his skills in designing and building weapons. “I will assemble catapults, mangonels, trebuchets and other instruments of wonderful efficiency…I will make an infinite number of items for attack and defense,” he wrote. Leonardo’s letter convinced the duke of his talents, and he got the job. He set about designing the weapons that the duke desired. But Leonardo was infinitely creative, always thinking of new things, new ideas—he could not be limited to weapons alone. One idea that he had not mentioned in his application was the ornithopter. It was not a weapon of war, and it was not something that the duke had asked for, but Leonardo went ahead and designed it anyway. Leonardo was fascinated by the idea of flight. The word “ornithopter” comes from two words meaning “bird” and “wings.” And on first inspection, his plans resembled a bird’s wings attached to a human being’s arms. He concluded that a human being’s arms were neither strong enough nor light enough to stay in the air for long. So, his design included sets of foot pedals and levers that were operated with the hands. He created detailed plans and presented them to the duke, uncertain of how the duke would react to a design for which he didn’t ask. As it turned out, the duke was very impressed with the ornithopter, but it wasn’t Leonardo’s innovation that excited him. He immediately thought of the ways this machine could be used in war. If a spy could fly over the enemy’s camp, imagine what information he could gather! This was not what Leonardo had intended for his beautiful flying machine. But how Leonardo felt about war turned out not to matter in the end. His ornithopter was never built—along with his designs for tanks, parachutes, diving suits, machine guns, and even robots that he created for the duke. The ideas of Leonardo da Vinci were centuries ahead of the technology needed to make them. Read the excerpt from "The Ornithopter." He created detailed plans and presented them to the duke, uncertain of how the duke would react to a design for which he didn't ask. Which type of conflict is expressed in this excerpt? individual vs. nature individual vs. individual individual vs. self individual vs. society

Read the excerpt from A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. For surely, Sir, you will not assert, that a duty can be binding which is not founded on reason? If indeed this be their destination, arguments may be drawn from reason: and thus augustly supported, the more understanding women acquire, the more they will be attached to their duty—comprehending it—for unless they comprehend it, unless their morals be fixed on the same immutable principle as those of man, no authority can make them discharge it in a virtuous manner. They may be convenient slaves, but slavery will have its constant effect, degrading the master and the abject dependent. How does this idea enhance Wollstonecraft’s argument? by suggesting that women’s assigned roles enslave them by suggesting that women need more hired help by insisting that men explain women’s duties to them by insisting that women have better morals than men

Answers

A. by suggesting that women’s assigned roles enslave them.

The idea that "unless their morals be fixed on the same immutable principle as those of man, no authority can make them discharge it in a virtuous manner" enhances Wollstonecraft's argument by suggesting that women should have access to education and be able to comprehend their duties in the same way that men do.

What is the main idea of a vindication of the rights of women?

The goal of Wollstonecraft's argument for women's rights is not for women to dominate men. Instead, she advocates for granting women more freedoms so that they can equally contribute to society with males.

Wollstonecraft argues that women should not simply be convenient slaves, but should have the same understanding and attachment to their duty as men. By emphasizing the importance of reason and moral principles in guiding women's behavior, Wollstonecraft asserts that women should not be subject to blind obedience or the authority of others, but should be able to make their own decisions and act virtuously based on their own understanding.

Read the excerpt from Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech "The Struggle for Human Rights.”

As I see it, it is not going to be easy to attain unanimity with respect to our different concepts of government and human rights. The struggle is bound to be difficult and one in which we must be firm but patient. If we adhere faithfully to our principles I think it is possible for us to maintain freedom and to do so peacefully and without recourse to force.

The future must see the broadening of human rights throughout the world. People who have glimpsed freedom will never be content until they have secured it for themselves. In a truest sense, human rights are a fundamental object of law and government in a just society. Human rights exist to the degree that they are respected by people in relations with each other and by governments in relations with their citizens.

What type of evidence does Roosevelt use to support the claim that the United Nations must attain unanimity on the human rights issue?

Roosevelt uses anecdotal evidence by discussing how other countries have approached human rights struggles in the past.
Roosevelt uses logical evidence by explaining that, once people have seen these freedoms, they will want them for themselves.
Roosevelt uses anecdotal evidence by sharing that, because human rights make government work, they must be part of the law.
Roosevelt uses logical evidence by referring to data about peaceful struggles for human rights around the world.

The type of evidence that Roosevelt uses to support the claim that the United Nations must attain unanimity on the human rights issue is this:

B. Roosevelt uses logical evidence by explaining that, once people have seen these freedoms, they will want them for themselves.

What is logical evidence?

Logical evidence is that which tries to use reason to prove the accuracy of a statement. In the above passage by Roosevelt, we can see that he tries to tell his audience why it is logical to push for unanimity on human rights issues by using simple logical reasoning.

He said that once people have had a dose of freedom they will naturally want to experience the freedom themselves. This is the motivation for becoming involved in the fight for human rights.  A person who thinks in this line will see that the reasoning is correct based on human interactions. Which pair of lines in these poetic passages uses onomatopoeia?
Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed,
The dear repose for limbs with travel tired,
But then begins a journey in my head
To work my mind, when body's work's expired.
For then my thoughts (from far where I abide)
Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,
And keep my drooping eyelids open wide,
Looking on darkness which the blind do see.
(William Shakespeare, Sonnet 27)
Hear the sledges with the bells-
Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle,
In the icy air of night!
While the stars that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
(Edgar Allan Poe, "The Bells")
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

Answers

In the poetic passage shown, the onomatopoeia is used in the second excerpt from Edgar Allan Poe's The Bells. The lines are What a cheerful world her melodies tell! How they ring, ring, ring, in the frozen night air. The stars scattered across the sky seem to twinkle with crystalline joy. That's because tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, the words make the same sound as a bell.

Onomatopoeia is the process of creating words that phonetically mimic, resemble, or suggest the sounds they represent. Such words themselves are also called onomatopoeia. Common onomatopoeias include animal sounds such as oink, meow or meow, roar, and chirping. A mouse squealed across the room. Suddenly there was a loud bang at the door. A wave hit the side of the boat. Sausage is baked in a frying pan.

Italics may contain hyphens when someone is describing sounds in first-person narration. Alternatively, if you prefer to omit the dashes when using tone in your narration, you can always use italics and commas to emphasize the onomatopoeia and add a beat if necessary.

The good and evil in the tempest

Answers

"The Tempest" by William Shakespeare delves into the themes of good and evil, showcasing the complexity of human nature and the blurred lines between morality and ambiguity.

The play presents characters and situations that challenge simplistic notions of good and evil. Prospero, the protagonist, initially seeks revenge, which may be seen as a morally questionable act. However, as the play progresses, Prospero exhibits a transformation towards forgiveness and reconciliation, representing the potential for good to overcome evil through wisdom and mercy.

Characters like Caliban and Antonio embody the darker aspects of human nature. Caliban, while initially depicted as a savage creature, displays complexity and vulnerability, challenging the easy categorization of evil. Antonio's thirst for power and willingness to betray others highlight the corrupting influence of ambition.

The character of Ariel adds further nuance to the exploration of good and evil. Ariel carries out Prospero's commands but also desires freedom and demonstrates mischievous tendencies, showcasing the complexity and potential duality within individuals.

Overall, "The Tempest" examines the multifaceted nature of good and evil, questioning the dichotomy and offering a deeper understanding of human morality. Shakespeare invites the audience to reflect on the complexities of human behavior and the moral choices individuals make, reminding us that characters cannot be easily categorized as purely good or evil.
