In President Obama’s remarks to assembled leaders from the Pacific Island Conference of Leaders and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature World Conservation Congress, what is his purpose in delivering this message? How does he use rhetoric to support and advance his purpose? Use evidence from the text to support your response. Your response should be at least two complete paragraphs.
excerpt from Remarks by the President of the United States
September 1, 2016
Honolulu, Hawaii
And in my address there I talked about climate change and conservation, and how those two things are inextricably linked. Few people understand, I think, the stakes better than our Pacific Island leaders, because they’re seeing already the impact. Rising temperatures and sea levels pose an existential threat to your countries. And while some members of the U.S. Congress still seem to be debating whether climate change is real or not, many of you are already planning for new places for your people to live. Crops are withering in the Marshall Islands. Kiribati bought land in another country because theirs may someday be submerged. High seas forced villagers from their homes in Fiji.
And no nation, not even one as powerful as the United States, is immune from a changing climate. I saw it myself last year in our northernmost state of Alaska, where the sea is already swallowing villages and eating away at shorelines; where the permafrost thaws and the tundra is burning; where glaciers are melting at a pace unprecedented in modern times. And it was a preview of our future if the climate keeps changing faster than our efforts to address it.
And that’s why I’ve devoted so much of my time and my energy to making sure that we get this right while we still have time. I spoke about this at length in a speech earlier today, but over the past seven and a half years, America has worked to generate more clean energy, use less dirty energy, and waste less energy overall. And it’s made a difference. Our investments have tripled wind power, multiplied solar power thirtyfold, and, in many places, helped clean energy become cheaper than dirty energy. And we did all of this while fueling the longest uninterrupted streak of job growth on record.
So there’s no conflict between a healthy economy and a healthy planet. And that’s why I’ve committed, along with Canada and Mexico, to get 50 percent of U.S. electricity from clean sources by 2025. And with many of our biggest businesses switching to clean energy, I’m absolutely confident that we can meet that goal.
But that’s not all. I’ve also made sure we’re better prepared for the impacts of climate change, because even as we need to hit the brakes so that we don’t go over the cliff, we’re not going to come to an immediate stop. We know that there is still going to be an inevitable impact as a consequence of rising temperatures. And that means conservation has been a cornerstone of my presidency.
Answer:
In former President Obama's speech, he puts emphasis on the need for immediate action on environmental impact caused by society, he uses persuasive techniques by mentioning examples of environmental impact such as Fiji villagers being forced from their homes due to rising sea levels and melting glaciers in Alaska. It appears that he tries to appeal to peoples feelings and ethics by using pathos and ethos in his argument.
He also appeals to the audiences logic by using logos for example, his mentioning of uninterrupted job growth. While still being able to increase use of clean energy as opposed to unclean energy. And also providing reassurance that there have been successful cases of increasing use of clean energy. He mentions the Paris agreement and it's change for the better in the environment.
The purpose of Obama in conveying the message is to outline the requirement of prompt action on environmental concerns.
President Obama's speechIn his address, Obama highlights the need that instant action must be taken against the problems created by humans to the environment.
To enhance the efficacy of his message, he has employed various persuasive techniques(pathos, logos, ethos) through the use of examples of Fij Villagers along with the growth in the jobs.
The description of the Paris agreement and cleaning energy clarifies the idea more effectively and makes it more understanding and relatable for the readers.

Read this excerpt from Thomas Paine's essay "Common Sense":
Mankind being originally equals in the order of creation, the equality could only be destroyed by some subsequent circumstance; the distinctions of rich, and poor, may in a great measure be accounted for, and that without having recourse to the harsh, ill-sounding names of oppression and avarice. Oppression is often the CONSEQUENCE, but seldom or never the MEANS of riches; and though avarice will preserve a man from being necessitously poor, it generally makes him too timorous to be wealthy.
But there is another and greater distinction, for which no truly natural or religious reason can be assigned, and that is, the distinction of men into KINGS and SUBJECTS. Male and female are the distinctions of nature, good and bad the distinctions of heaven; but how a race of men came into the world so exalted above the rest, and distinguished like some new species, is worth inquiring into, and whether they are the means of happiness or of misery to mankind.

The evidence from the text that leads me to believe that the main character of "Top of the Food Chain" is an unreliable narrator is option C. He makes excuses and says he couldn't predict the problems that would arise.
Throughout the story, the main character recounts the events that unfold when a pesticide called DDT is introduced to a small town. Initially, he presents himself as a knowledgeable and authoritative voice, providing facts about the number of cats imported and demonstrating expertise in the subject matter (option D). However, as the narrative progresses, it becomes clear that he is unreliable.
The main character constantly makes excuses for the unexpected and disastrous consequences of the pesticide. He claims he couldn't predict the problems that would arise (option C). This suggests a lack of foresight and accountability on his part. Rather than acknowledging his own role in the situation or taking responsibility for the damage caused, he shifts the blame to external factors.
Furthermore, the main character's sympathetic portrayal of the people's suffering (option A) may be seen as an attempt to deflect attention from his own shortcomings. By evoking pity in the audience, he manipulates their emotions to distract them from his own culpability.
Overall, the main character's excuses and deflection of responsibility indicate that he is an unreliable narrator, undermining the trustworthiness of his account and raising questions about his credibility.

In a night, or in a day,

Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand,
How fewl yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep
While I weep,while I weepl
O Godl can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O Godl can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?

An example of a behavioral adaptation is animals migrating to a warmer climate. An adaptation is a genetic change, called a mutation, that makes an organism better able to live in its environment. A mutation is passed down over the generations until it becomes part of the species. There are two kinds of adaptations, structural and behavioral. Both help organisms to survive. 3. Interpret Whom does the knight in "Eldorado" represent? What
does Eldorado itself represent?
4. Critique
Think about the words that appear at the end of each
stanza of "Eldorado." How effectively do they connect to the
changing mood of the poem?
5. Analyze The poet references a shadow in each of the four stanzas
of "Eldorado." Why do you think the poet repeatedly refers to a
shadow? How does the reference to the shadow change from the
first stanza to the last?
3) All people who go through life are shown by the knight. Eldorado is a symbol of those unattainable ideals.
4)
• Stanza 1: You feel like you are going on an adventure or having fun.
• Stanza 2: Because the knight is getting older and still has not found Eldorado, the mood is sad and depressed.
• Stanza 3: The mood is one of sadness and failure, as he grows older and loses hope to the point where he seeks assistance.
• Stanza 4: The tone is mocking, as the shadow inquires whether he ever discovered it.
5) The poem raises a thoughtful moral issue that many readers can relate to in some way. Every stanza of the poem, which is made up of six lines per line, contains the word "shadow," which is used four times in total. Each stanza begins with the third line, which introduces the term "shadow." Though the term appears multiple times, each instance has a distinct meaning. The first shadow is a real shadow, a shadow that the sun casts. It could also mean both happiness and sadness. The second shadow is the shadow that has taken over the knight's heart after a lot of unsuccessful searching. The third shadow is a living being, his or an angel. The fourth shadow alludes to the "Valley of the Shadow" in a metaphorical sense. The fact that the knight has grown old and weak and must cross "Over the Mountains of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow" is interpreted as a symbol of the knight's death, as it corresponds to the Biblical valley of death. To understand Poe's message, we need to know how the word "shadow" came to be used.
Poe's poem is notable for its use of symbols such as shadow and Eldorado, as well as other symbols. It helps to emphasize his main point even more. Other methods Poe employs to communicate with his audience include auditory and visual senses. Poe's poem uses the aabccb rhyme scheme in the first three stanzas and the xxabba rhyme scheme in the fourth. This is one way Poe amazingly appeals to the readers' senses of hearing and imagery. Poe authored a poem that was both stressed and un-stressed. When read aloud, the rhyme scheme produces a thumpity, thump sound, evoking the clattering of the horse's trot. In this poem, symbols and rhyme schemes help the reader get immersed in the scene. They also make them want to keep reading until the very end of the poem.
That ‘shadow' becomes increasingly sinister as the poem progresses: in the first stanza, it is simply the complement of sunshine; in the final stanza, it is capitalized, as 'Shadow,' and resonates with a deathly connotation. The Bible's 23rd Psalm is invoked in 'Down the Valley of the Shadow.'
\(The\ Lord\ is\ my\ shepherd;\ I\ shall\ not\ want.\\ He\ maketh\ me\ to\ lie\ down\ in\ green\ pastures:\\ he\ leadeth\ me\ beside\ the\ still\ waters.\\ He\ restoreth\ my\ soul:\ he\ leadeth\ me\ in\ the\\ paths\ of\ righteousness\ for\ his\ nime's\ sake.\\ Yea,\ though\ I\ walk\ through\ the\ valley\ of\ the\\ shadow\ of\ death,\ I\ will\ fear\ no\ evil:\ for\ thou\\ art\ with\ me;\ thy\ rod\ and\ thy\ staff\ they\\ comfort\ me.\)

How is the character the same how is it different?:
Answer:
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee that was published in 1960. The novel was adapted into a film in 1962. The mad dog scene in both the novel and the film is an important scene that highlights several literary elements such as setting, conflict, and character development.
In both the novel and the film, the setting of the mad dog scene is the same. It takes place on a hot summer day in Maycomb, Alabama.
