what are two main aspects which determine the type of language that is used in mass media?

Answers

The two main aspects that determine the type of language used in mass media are the target audience and the purpose of the message.

1. Target audience: The primary factor influencing the choice of language in mass media is the target audience. Different media outlets cater to diverse demographic groups with varying language preferences and comprehension levels. For example, a newspaper aimed at educated professionals may use formal language and technical jargon, whereas a tabloid targeting a wider readership might employ simpler language and colloquial expressions.

2. Purpose of the message: The purpose of the message being conveyed also plays a significant role in determining the language used in mass media. Different media platforms serve different objectives, such as providing information, entertaining, persuading, or promoting products. The language chosen will align with these goals. News broadcasts, for instance, aim to inform and present facts objectively, using clear and concise language. In contrast, advertisements often employ persuasive techniques and may use more informal or catchy language to engage the audience.

3. Cultural and social considerations: Language used in mass media is also influenced by cultural and social factors. Media outlets need to consider cultural sensitivities, political correctness, and social norms while crafting their content. They may adapt their language to avoid offense or controversy, adhere to legal regulations, or reflect the values and expectations of their target audience.

4. Media platform and format: Different media platforms and formats have their own conventions and limitations. Television broadcasts, for instance, may rely on visual cues and body language to complement verbal communication, while radio programs solely rely on spoken words. The language used in print media, such as newspapers or magazines, may be more formal and structured compared to online articles or social media posts, which often utilize a more conversational and informal style.

By considering these two main aspects, namely the target audience and the purpose of the message, mass media can tailor their language choices to effectively engage their intended viewers, readers, or listeners while achieving their communication objectives.

You got into a fight with your mother about cleaning your room. You are upset and want to process your feelings about the incident. Write a diary entry in 100-150 words.
In your diary entry you might talk about • the current state of your room, your general levels of cleanliness, how acceptable/ unacceptable they are • the pressures on you, the demands on your time by your studies and social life •an attempt to understand your mother's concerns.

Answers

Dear Diary,

Today was a difficult day, as I was in a heated argument with my mother about the state of my room. I feel upset and frustrated, and I need a space to process my feelings about the incident.

Firstly, I must admit that my room has become messy lately. My cleanliness levels have slipped, and I can understand why my mother finds them unacceptable. I've been caught up with my studies and social life, often prioritizing them over tidy living spaces. However, I realize now that neglecting my room caused unnecessary stress and tension.

In trying to understand my mother's concerns, I recognize that she wants me to develop healthy habits and take responsibility for my personal space. She likely worries about the negative impact a messy environment can have on my overall well-being and productivity. Although I may not agree with her methods or the intensity of her reaction, I can empathize with her intentions.

This incident prompted me to reflect on the importance of finding a balance between my commitments and keeping my living space organized. I need to make a conscious effort to manage my time more efficiently and incorporate regular cleaning into my routine.

In the future, I hope to approach discussions with my mother calmer and more understanding. Both of us must communicate openly and find compromises that satisfy our respective needs. I don't want our relationship to be strained by disagreements about something as seemingly trivial as cleaning.

Writing this diary entry has helped me process my feelings and gain a clearer perspective on the situation. I am determined to take responsibility for my room and work towards maintaining a cleaner and more organized living space. Ultimately, I hope this incident catalyzes personal growth and improved communication within my family.

Yours sincerely,

Answers

The analogy "saccharin: fake:: real" draws a parallel between saccharin and the concept of fake in relation to reality.

Saccharin is an artificial sweetener that is often used as a sugar substitute. In this context, saccharin represents something that is artificial or synthetic, resembling or imitating the taste of real sugar. The term "fake" generally refers to something that is not genuine or authentic, replicating or pretending to be the real thing. Various veterans had told him tales. Others spoke of tattered and eternally hungry men who fired despondent powders....
Still, he could not put a whole faith in veterans' tales, for recruits were their prey. They talked much of smoke, fire, and blood, but he could not tell how much might be lies. They persistently yelled "Fresh fish!" at him, and were in no wise to be trusted.
However, he perceived now that it did not greatly matter what kind of soldiers he was going to fight, so long as they fought, which fact no one disputed. There was a more serious problem. He lay in his bunk pondering upon it. He tried to mathematically prove to himself that he would not run from a battle.
Previously he had never felt obliged to wrestle too seriously with this question. In his life he had taken certain things for granted, never challenging his belief in ultimate success, and bothering little about means and roads. But here he was confronted with a thing of moment. He felt that in this crisis his laws of life were useless. Whatever he had learned of himself was here of no avail. He was an unknown quantity. The Sound of Spring

Alexa reclined on a blanket in the backyard, silently wishing there was more to do in her neighborhood than lie around, and quietly hoping for relief from her boredom. It was too cool out to go swimming, and yet too warm out to stay inside. How could she occupy herself? Birds trilled in the boxwoods, and, lacking any other alternative, she closed her eyes to listen. The distant whoosh of traffic. A dog barking. And then, like an exquisite melody, the song of children playing.

Right then, she knew what she would do.

The park. It was a perfect day for an afternoon in the park . . . but would her mom take her?

Mom was in the garden. The heavy smell of lavender reached her as she turned the corner. Her mother was a sight! The knees of her jeans were sullied and brown, her shirt rumpled and untucked, and her curly, brown hair refused to be restrained by her red kerchief.

"What do you need, sweetie?"

"Can we go to the park?"

Her mother looked at her gloves, brown with dirt. She looked at the chrysanthemums still in their containers.

"Ask Ruby if she will go with you," she said.

Alexa looked over at her older sister, who seemed engrossed in the book she was reading.

"So, Ruby, it's a beautiful day, isn't it?"

Her sister peered over the top of her book with questioning eyes. Little did Alexa know that Ruby had overheard her conversation in the garden with their mother.

"It is," Ruby replied. "In fact, I was thinking it would be a great day to take a walk to the park. I can read my book there just as well as I can here."

"You're the best sister ever!" Alexa shouted, a wide grin spreading across her face.

Soon Alexa was trotting down the sidewalk with Ruby following behind. They came to the first crosswalk and were waiting for the light to change, when music began playing from somewhere nearby. Alexa paused, listening. Whoever was playing was good. She had to find out who it was.

"I'm pretty sure I know where it is coming from," Ruby said, seeing the look of interest in Alexa's face. Ruby knew her little sister's taste for loud music. It wasn't her style, but Ruby respected Alexa's interests. She also knew that her friend Akari had a brother who played guitar, and Akari lived around the corner from where they were standing.

Ruby allowed Alexa to follow the music to a house a half a block away. The front porch was much like their own, with a couple of rocking chairs and some wind chimes swaying softly in the breeze. It was impossible to hear the soft twinkling of the chimes with the ear-piercing sound (in Ruby's opinion, anyway) coming from the open garage.

Alexa walked over to the garage, and there stood the guitarist: Kaito Tanaka.

She couldn't believe it.

Alexa had known Kaito since they were little, and their sisters were good friends. They were on the swim team together, she often saw him on his bike around the neighborhood, and sometimes they played court games together. How could she not have known that he was an amazing musician?

Akari, delighted to see that her friend had stopped by, stepped out of the front door and motioned for the girls to come inside. Ruby quickly agreed, eager to get away from the music. Alexa wanted to stay outside and listen to Kaito play.

He was lost in the music, eyes closed, fingers flying. He struck one final note, the music echoing in the air, and then it faded into nothing, replaced by the hum of the amplifier. Alexa tried to let him enjoy the moment, but she couldn't help herself. She clapped and cried out "wooo-hooo!"

Startled, Kaito took a stumbling step backward.

"H-how long have you been there?" he asked.

"Just for the end there. You're really good."

"Thanks."

An awkward silence passed between them. Alexa cleared her throat.

"Do you think you could show me how to play?"

"Um, right now?"

"Yeah. I've always wanted to learn an instrument."

"Well, I have to walk my dog," Kaito said.

Alexa looked around the yard. There wasn't a dog anywhere in sight.

"He's inside. Guitar's too loud."

"Oh, yeah, my sister feels the same way," Alexa said with a smile. "She's hiding inside with your dog."

Kaito laughed as Ruby appeared by Alexa's side.

"What?" Ruby said. "Akari said you had to walk Rufus so I figured the playing was done."

"Yeah, for now," Kaito said. "But can you guys come back tomorrow? Then I can start teaching Alexa how to play."

"Seriously?" Alexa asked, elated.

"Definitely—as long as it's ok with your sister."

"Sure," replied Ruby with a shrug. "I'm always happy to hang out with Akari."

"Cool! See you tomorrow," said Kaito.

Alexa and Ruby continued their walk to the park. Alexa was still looking forward to playing outside, but she was even more excited about her first guitar lesson the next day.
